AM335X: Programming the device

Hello,

I recently got into developing embedded systems. I have a lot of the information down but I don't understand how the microprocessor is programmed I've searched online and I keep getting information on coding which I already understand. My question is how do you communicate with the hardware? I'm designing using the am3359 can any one tell me how it's done or give me helpful links to the information.

Hi,

None of the Sitara processors have internal flash memory. Software is usually loaded from external flash memory, like NAND, NOR, eMMC or SD card, to name a few. You can find more information here: processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Linux_Core_U-Boot_User's_Guide

Thank you for your reply. I thought that was the case after reading the data sheet but still I didn't understand where to start. How would I go about writing code to the flash memory such as nand or nor. I'm assuming it's some how done through serial communication. Would I need to connect the flash memory and program using the processor or some how load data to the memory that will allow me to program using serial like us or uart?

Sorry if I'm asking to much I've honestly searched a lot for this information before asking.

AM335x has quite a choice of boot sources. These are described in section 26 of the AM335X Technical Reference Manual (available for download on the product page). If you use Linux for example, the easiest way is to boot from an SD card, and then when U-boot is loaded you can program the flash memory. The wiki I gave you in my previous post describes these procedures.
