Linux/DRA756: regarding hypervisor on J6 - DRA 75x

Part Number: DRA756

Tool/software: Linux

Hi,

We have a requirement from one of our customers to build Digital instrument cluster with hypervisor support which will run Android IVI.

Jacinto 6 based DRA 75x could be our target platform with Linux as base. We will use J6 EVM to start with and work towards having a custom board on J6.

Could anyone give us more details regarding bringing up of hypervisor on J6 board? We would like to know which hypervisor was used and if Android can be hosted on it.

Waiting for your valuable reply.

thanks,

prabhuraj

  • Hi,
Any help regarding this query? We are looking at having multi OS support with hypervisor(Native Linux for Digital instrument cluster and Android for IVI with good performance). Is this feasible on DRA 756?

    Thanks,
    prabhuraj
  • Hi Prabhuraj,

I have forwarded your question to Android experts.

    Regards,

  • Thanks a lot Yordan for directing the question to appropriate forum.
We have been doing analysis from the last one week and we now know that a type 1 hypervisor (like Xen) would work well handling Linux and Android IVI. There are no set of instructions regarding porting(We could only find for OMAP5, which is base for J6).

Anyone who have worked on it can please provide details. We are also comparing the performance of J6 with i.MX6 quad core(A9, 1GHz).

    regards,

We had worked on a proof-of-concept integrated cockpit demo for CES'17 - you can potentially find the demo videos on youtube as well.
The prototype was built for dual display, dual OS configuration(Linux, android) running on top of xen hypervisor - this was work carried out in collaboration with GlobalLogic(3P supporting xen hypervisor on J6 platform)

The demo included several components developed by GlobalLogic(under proprietary license) , hence you may need support from 3P or have necessary in-house expertise to manage the hypervisor porting

So feasibility is well proven on J6, but you will need in-house expertise or collaborate with right 3P for hypervisor support and expertise
  • Thanks a lot Srirama for your valuable feedback.

I have following questions regarding porting xen. Your feedback will help me and many other looking to work on J6 hypervisor :

    1) What are the modifications done in Xen to support J6(A high level details would be of great help)

    2) Can we take the Omap5 xen patches and take it forward to port on J6?(I am not sure how stable xen port for OMAP5 is)
Since OMAP5 and J6 are A15 based and J6 is derived out of OMAP5, I am assuming that many things will come handy while porting xen on J6.

    3) Does TI has any plan to officially support Xen or any other hypervisor on J6 platform?

4)Can you provide technical contact for GlobalLogic team which worked on porting xen on j6?

    Please provide your comments.

    thanks,

TI does not have plan for supporting Xen or any other hypervisor as part of standard TI SDK offering -we do have vibrant 3p ecosystem that you can engage with in this regard

With regard to modifications, it would follow from your system architecture, system resource partitioning and sharing. Expect changes to bootloader, xen hypervisor (minimal) , kernel(linux & android) based on system partitioning. larger features include support for Graphics, Display and audio sharing.
  • Thanks Srirama for your comments. This clears my queries. I am marking it as resolved.

    thanks again!
