Linux/AM3354: Kernel 4.9.28 boot problem: "musb_init_controller failed with status -517"

Hi,

when booting kernel 4.9.28 (4.9.28+gitAUTOINC+eed43d1050-geed43d1050) the above mentioned error occurs multiple times and in consequence USB devices do not work at all. With kernel 4.1.18, the same device tree files and nearly the same kernel configuration USB worked well. The boot messages with 4.9.28-kernel and the corresponding configuration files (dts, kernel config) are as follows:

1854.28-log-configs.tar.gz

Any ideas to resolve this issue?

Hi Arndt Kritzner,

Can you please let me know if you are using a custom board or AM335x kit? Also, can you please share the USB configurations done in 4.1 and 4.9 kernel?

Hi Arndt Kritzner,

I am not seeing following configurations, which is required for configuring USB PHY in the config file that you have shared:

CONFIG_NOP_USB_XCEIV
CONFIG_AM335X_CONTROL_USB
CONFIG_AM335X_PHY_USB

Can you try enabling these and check if the issue is occurring ?

yes, this is a custom board.

The working configuration for 4.1.18 kernel is 7635.linux-4.1.18.config.working.gz

The failing 4.9.28 kernel config is already attached to my yesterdays post.

at the end adding these configuration settings does result in a kernel with working USB support (had a recompilation issue in my first attempt).

You have attached dtb. While i try to parse the dtb to make sense, it would be helpful if you can share the USB related dts, if possible for both kernels ?

Hi Arndt Kritsner,

Meanwhile you can go through(if not gone through already) the following links for configuring in USB Host in AM335x.
1. processors.wiki.ti.com/.../UsbgeneralpageLinux-v3p1
2. processors.wiki.ti.com/.../AM335x_USB_Driver's_Guide
-517 is probe related error. So would suggest you to give a try USB drivers as built in modules once(=y) and not as loadable ones(=m) and see if it is making any difference.

Hi Dwarakesh,

sorry for the dtb. So - just for completeness - the device tree source files are: 4118.dimm-cpu12-k4.dts.gz and 1638.dimm-cpu12-b-k4.dts.gz. DIMM-CPU12 (without "B") has no PMIC.
