Sometimes QSPI flash probe fail at system boot phase

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRA742

We are using DRA742, BSP version (7.04.00.03), QSPI flash:STMicro N25Q128. We are doing long-term test in our custom board(system will do some test, then power-off, power-on, and repeat the tests). Sometimes QSPI flash probe fail at boot phase, so i can't access flash at kernel through "mtd_debug" command.

Because temperature will vary during the test, so, could it possible the fail reason is because temperature?

Right now, fail happend at CPU-temperature 32 and 95 degree(not always, system can also probe flash success at lower than 32 or higher than 95 temperature). I alreday check the SPEC. of flash, it should work fine at -40 ~ 105 degree.

When flash probe fail, i can see "ti-qspi 4b300000.qspi: write timed out" and "spi_master spi32766: failed to transfer one message from queue" these message.

    What is frequency of failure, is it happen in all boards or specific set of boards ? Did you try to monitor the signals ? Is the flash device is busy. Can you dump QSPI register during the failure scenario. Did this happen always on write?

    Failure rate is not fixed, about 1/728 at board-A, 2/912 at board-B. Right now, only happend at two boards.

    Acturally, i haven't write yet, because system probe flash fail, so i can't access flash. We're using automatica test, in my test scenario, i'll use "mtd_debug info /dev/mtd0" to check flash existence. Since flash probe fail at boot phase, so i get error message.

    Can you list where your various boot binaries are stored? Are any of these stored in QSPI?

    • u-boot.img
    • kernel
    • device tree

    I am trying to understand if the device is accessed from both u-boot and kernel but the probe fails only in the kernel?

    I flash MLO at offset 0 and u-boot.img at offset 0x40000 on QSPI flash.

    Since i use two-stage boot, so i only flash MLO and u-boot.img on QSPI flash, kernel & device tree are store at SD card.

    Can you confirm that the failure was always seen in the kernel? Did the board ever fail while executing MLO or u-boot.img?

    Currently, only happend in the kernel, no situation about u-boot boot fail.
    That's why i'm curiously, if u-boot can boot up which mean QSPI flash device work fine, but why the device can't be probe in the kernel?
