I'm new - Where to start and which microcontroller to choose?

Hello,

I'm sorry if I'm posting this message to a wrong forum.

I've been using PIC microcontrollers until now, and from now on I want to start using TI ARM microcontrollers.

I need some advice on choosing a suitable MCU and programming it.

First of all, I need a MCU with 10-bit ADC and at least 14 GPIO pins. Any other features (frequency, supply voltage, timers, etc) that I did not mention can be at any range.

In which series should I search this MCU? In MSP430 or in Stellaris? There are too many products, and I'm quite confused.

My second inquiry is, how to program this MCU. Is there any standard way of programming all of the Texas Instruments ARM controller series, or do I have to buy a new JTAG for each ARM controller families?

Any help will be appreciated.

  • If you are looking for micro-controllers then have a look at www.ti.com and click on "microcontrollers" under the products section. You will find some selection guides for various members of TI's microcontroller families. From what you have mentioned so far I would anticipate that the MSP430 or Stellaris devices may be what you are looking for. There are various product selection tools on the web page allowing you to select features.

If you need more processing power then you could look at the "Arm" devices from under the products section.

    BR,
