TMS320C6416: clock

Part Number: TMS320C6416

Can TMS320C6416 generate clock without oscillator? The customer found the board can work without clkin input by accident. But i have viewed the clock pll, it seems clkin/eclkin are necessary.

  • Hi,

    it seems clkin/eclkin are necessary.

Yes, your understanding is correct. See clock PLL in TMS320C6416 Datasheet (www.ti.com/.../tms320c6416.pdf):
"Most of the internal C64x™ DSP clocks are generated from a single source through the CLKIN pin. This source clock either drives the PLL, which multiplies the source clock frequency to generate the internal CPU clock, or bypasses the PLL to become the internal CPU clock.

  • Hi Yordan,

Customer wants to know if it is still plausible to have the board work even without the input of extarnet oscillator? And what may makes it happen?
  • Hi Nancy,

When you design the device you must supply the clkin, aeclkin from external clock sources. See the reference design document:
    http://www.ti.com/tool/sprc137

I am not sure what happens in their case. Did they follow the datasheet & SPRC137 recommendations? How did they verified the board is working without clkin input (are they running some software on the device in this case)? I don't think this is a reliable behaviour and they must not consider implementing their design without clkin & aeclkin inputs.
