AM5728: Temperature and power consumption measurements

Hi，

I have some doubts of the datasheet “AM572x Thermal Considerations”，the sheet describes the temperature and power consumption changes when heatsink and fan are mounted or not .So I want to ask whether the mentioned heatsink is the same as the heatsink in the AM5728 general-purpose (GP) evaluation module (EVM) we buy from TI or not.And what kind of fan the report used to analyze the temperature and power consumption, such as the consumption , speed and power of the fan?

At last, I want to know if I use a much better heatsink with any fan, can the temperature and power consumption reach a better effect? I may try to use the a big heatsink leading the heat to a big aluminum box.

Dhrystone tests were repeated with MPU at OPP_NOM (1.0GHz) and OPP_HIGH (1.5GHz)；
I noticed that in Dhrystone Dual Core (MPU @ OPP_HIGH) mode, the MPU was HIGH, and the GPU DSP IVA were HIGH*, the result was really bad. I want to konw if I run the two DSP core meanwhile, what condition can the chip stands? Will the system crashes very soon for the temperature reaches to the limit? Is there any test reports about that?

Hi challex,

Your first two questions were answered in the link Biser provided, but will repeat here for others:

1) The heatsink used during benchmark testing is the same as the unit shipped with the AM5728 GP EVM (23mm x 23mm x 9mm CTS BDN10-3CB/A01).

2) The fan used is 3.5 cfm @ 13000RPM made by Sunon: Sunon MC25100V1-000U-A99

Reducing the junction temperature of the processor will have a positive impact on the power consumption of the device by reducing leakage. This is basically what the thermal considerations app note is trying to convey- power consumption went down as the thermal management improved.

At this time we do not have test cases which stress the DSP cores on AM5728. Do you have a use case in mind?

The system will not shutdown, so long as your keep the junction temperature of the processor below the critical temperature, which is 90C for commercial and 105C for industrial part numbers.

If you're using all the cores of the device, at maximum frequency, you will need to take care to provide adequate heat sinking, airflow, and access to fresh air.
