How do I do a successful shutdown with PMIC TPS65917-Q1?

I read the info about the Beaglebone so if the functionality is similar that would not work because the RTC is not functional on the boards shipped to our customer.

When initiating a shutdown -h I always get a kernel panic and have to have the co processor cut the power off to the PMIC. On certain boards it is not possible to power back up the DRA726 without a complete power off of the main power supply.

    It is a custom kernel based on the one in the automotive SDK 3.02.
    Our hardware is based on the TI EVM but with enough differences that it required a modified device tree and added kernel modules for hardware not supported in the TI SDK. I used the yocto code that is used to generate that SDK as a base for our product.

    It still boots but weston and loading of the ethernet USB device is not done.
    removing the kernel module and rebooting fixes it but as before the rtc is not functionning

  • Hi Michel,

     There should not be any dependency between shutdown and RTC.

    RTC driver can be built even as a module and not be loaded at all but shutdown is expected to work.

    Why do you think the panic is related to PMIC?

    I have tried this on a TI DRA722 EVM but I dont see any issue. Attached logs.

    Also, I have measured the power on al VDD rails and I see no power being drawn after shutdown.

    Do you have a way to measure power on custom board?

    Can you let me know what SDK version are you using?

    I was off last week, thanksgiving holiday extended into a week

    Good that there is no dependency with the RTC. We are trying to figure out what gives the kernel panic. Our design is a bit different than the EVM. We have a co-processor STM32 that can turn the power on or off. If you provide me with an Email I could send you the schematic. We have an NDA with TI thru ACTIA automotive in France. Our TI technical contacts are from TI France.

    The STM32 goes to stop mode and wake up on a regular basis to see if the ignition line is turned on. If the ignition is on it turns the power on the PMIC. The STM32 can turn the power on but the DRA726 should be able to turn it off. The STM32 has its own supply.

    I had to modify your patch since it was not for the 4.4.45 kernel that I use. The problem goes away with the patch.
    I am still getting error messages on i2c1 though.

    Did this warning occur only after applying the patch? I don't see a direct relation because the patch only affects poweroff sequence.

    It means that i2c1 module could not be idled / disbaled within the given time (MAX_MODULE_DISABLE_TIME 5ms) - possibly because it's in use - the case where pmic is on i2c1.

    Can you try adding the following to &i2c1 node? (This should be okay unless you are using Suspend to Ram).

    ti,no-idle-on-init;

    ti,no-idle;

    One last question on the PMIC.

    Without the patch, what effect do you think it had on the board beside not being able to shutdown.
    I was wondering if it could be related to the problem we have on some boards where we cannot boot back unless we wait at least a minute before turning our ignition line back up. We are reading a 7.6V with the first ADC line on the PMIC. If we make sure that the voltage on the pin is lower than 800mv the problem doesn't exist.

    I am not sure why we had a problem with some boards and not others.

    I found a way around the problem. In the past we had a message going to the co-processor saying that the DRA726 wanted to turn off. Due to a bug in the kernel driver the wrong gpio on the PMIC was used. The DRA726 uses a different PMIC than the one on the TI EVM and the gpio used on the PMIC of the EVM doesn't exist on our board.

    It seems that the co-processor was not able to know all the time that the DRA726 was off and not on and would not bother trying to turn it on. The only way to boot was to disconnect the battery and reconnect it, not a popular thing with the customer.

    Once the PMIC bug was fixed it was then possible to do a clean shutdown without a kernel panic.
    I then changed the scheme from a message to using the GPIO we have between the DRA and co-processor.
    I would turn the gpio on as Linux started to tell the co-processor that the processor was on or off. Since it would take 10 seconds or more to turn on the co-processor had to do some game to be able to work correctly.

    I then turned the gpio on in u-boot but once Linux started it would turn the line off and the co-processor was getting confused and for a while we had to figure out how to keep the co-processor from bricking the system.

    By keeping Linux from resetting the gpio that fixed the problem. I did have issues with the line going down only when I would touch it with a probe so I put an internal pulldown in u-boot. That worked on most boards but not all. We then put a pulldown at the co-processor, that fixed the last problem.
