HD DVD connection with DM365 EVM

Hi,

I have purchased a High Definition DVD Player and connected the Component (YPbPr) output to the Component input of the DM365 evaluation Kit.

Then, when I played a DVD disc and executed the Encode Demo application, as below:

./encode -v sample.264 -y 3

I have chosen video standard as 720P @ 60fps using -y option.

But the below error message is displayed:

Error: Failed to detect video standard, video input connected?
Error: Failed to create video encoder: h264enc

What should I do to successfully run this Encode application?

1. Should I play a HD DVD Disc in my DVD player? And will this produce HD content on the Compoment output so that the Encode application detects the video standard as 720p.

2. Other than the above, should I perform any settings in my DVD player to obtain HD content on the Component output? I am using Philips DVP3368 model DVD Player.

Please help.

Thanks

  • I don't believe this is actually a HD-DVD player, but simply a regular DVD player which up-scales to HD resolutions, so you will not be able to play either Blu-ray not HD-DVD discs.

You will need to connect the player to a TV first to make sure you have configured it to output the format you are looking to generate.

You will need to read your player manual to work out how to do this.

Once you are sure that the player is generating the format you want you should try the DM365 connection again.

  • Hi Steve,

Many thanks for your response. We are looking for some more help from you.

Yes, as you have mentioned, we found that this Philips DVP3368 - DVD player upscales to HD resolutions as specified in their user manual given below:

Picture Enhancement: Progressive scan, Video upscaling, Video Upscaling(720p, 1080i/p), High Def (720p, 1080i, 1080p)

In the Connectivity section of the user manual, they have mentioned below information:

Connectivity: Analog audio Left/Right out, ComponentVideo out Progressive, Digital coaxial out, HDMI output, Analog audio Multi-channel out, USB

So, our aim is to connect the Component Video out Progressive (YPbPr) to the DM365 EVM, since the demo application expects the resolution of 720P @60fps in this Component video out from DVD.

Now, there is the following explanation about Progressive Scan in their manual:

Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality: Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

Further, the user manual specifies that there is a setting to switch ON the Progressive Scan option in the DVD, while connecting it to Progressive Scan TV. But they have not specified about the resolution of the output appearing in the Component Video out when this option is selected as 'ON'. And we also find that there are no settings present to choose the resolution of the Component Video Output as 720P in the user manual. But there are options to select the resolution when we are connecting this DVD player with HDTV through HDMI cable.

    Our queries are as follows:

Should we enable this Progressive Scan option in the DVD to obtain 720P resolution at the Component output while we are connecting it to DM365 EVM? How do we verify that the resolution of the Component video output from DVD is 720p? We are not clear because there are no settings in the DVD to configure this. What will be the resolution at the component video out when this Progressive Scan Option in DVD is selected as 'OFF'? Will it be interlaced output?

We enabled this Progressive scan option as 'ON' and connected this DVD to Samsung HDTV and found that it plays the regular DVD film on the HDTV. And subsequently, when we connect this to DM365 EVM, we find that the DVM no longer displays the previous error which we have specified in our earlier post (Video standard not detected) but instead it proceeds to detect the video standard and prints debug message as "V4L2_525P_60FPS" on the EVM console and displays Segmentation fault and then terminates. When we choose the Progressive Scan option as 'OFF' the EVM displays the error mentioned in our earlier post by SivaGowri.

Is this the right DVD to be used with DM365 EVM to run the Encode Demo Application? Do we need to purchase a true HD player for this? If so, can you specify some example model of DVD players that can used to connect with the DM365 for running the Demo Application (using the option 720P @ 60fps)?

Please clarify. Appreciate your help on this.

    Thanks

  • If your DVD player does not have explicit options to set 720p component output then I would expect that the progressive output setting will only enable 480p and not 720p.

It sounds like your DVD player may only support HD resolutions on the HDMI output (rather than ED, extended or enhanced definition).

The best way to detemine exactly what the output resolution is is to connect it to a TV and let it tell you what it detects.

With respect to the DM365 software, unfortunately I can't comment since I am not a software expert, sorry.

  • Hi Steve,

Thanks again for your clarification. Now, I have one more query:

Since the DVD player that is with us does not output 720P through the component video but has setting to output through HDMI port, then are there any commercially available 'HDMI to YPbPr (Component Video) converters'  which I can use to connect between the HDMI output of the DVD player and the Component Video input of the DM365 EVM?

Please let me know, if buying such an adapter will serve my purpose of producing 720p output through Component Video lines (from HDMI) using the same DVD player? Are there any such converters available in the market for this purpose?

Your input regarding this will be of great help to us.

    Thanks

    Sushmitha

  • Unfortunately any device which does this is illegal here in the USA due to copyright violations.

A device like this will remove the HDCP copy protection and is therefore illegal due to the DMCA legislation.

If you search the web you may find such devices, but I cannot make any recommendations.
