TMS320C5517: LDO outputs failure.

Part Number: TMS320C5517

Hello everybody,

we developed a board TMS320C5517 provided with 1,3V core and 3.3V I/O.

DSP power related schematics are attached.

We have a problem related to DSP LDO outputs (1V3_USB,1V3_SAR,1V3_CORE),

which on certain circustances simultaneously drop from the nominal level of 1,3V to about 1,0 V or less,

which is largely under specifications, and we believe could spoil the DSP.

First of all, in general what this voltage drop could mean ?
Which feature of the board could effect this internally generated voltages ?

Now here we explain the circumstances.

DSP is asynchronous EMIF interfaced to a FPGA, which in turn is the master for some slave ADCs.

When the FPGA is driving the ADCs control signal (MCLK,LRCLK,SCLK), as soon the ADCs are removed from Reset

all the DSP LCD outputs drop to 1,0 V or less: LCD outputs return to regular 1,3V as soon the ADCs are kept in Reset,

or the FPGA itself is kept in Reset.

The problem is also not present if  we remove the ADCs from the board...

Please note that no direct digital HW interface exist between the ADCs and DSP; moreover in our tests,

we prevent DSP from driving the EMIF interface to FPGA.

Do not esitate to request us more informations.

Thank you for your attention.

  • Hi,

    I'm looking into this.

  • Hi,

All of these power supplies (1V3_USB,1V3_SAR,1V3_CORE) are sourced from TMS320C5517 internal LDO, which is sourced from +3V3D_ISO (connected to LDOI).

I suspect that when you experience voltage drop on 1V3_USB, 1V3_SAR, 1V3_CORE, the +3V3D_ISO also drops. Can you check this? If this is true, then the DCDC that produce the +3V3D_ISO supply is not able to manage all the load from the board.

  • Hello Mr. Venturi,

Such type of issues with LDO's output voltage are possible.
    Let's start with LDO characteristics:
DSP_LDO - 1.3 V or 1.05 V, 250 mA max current for the digital core (to be used only to supply CVDD). Cannot be used to drive CVDD at the 1.4 V (>200 MHz) operating range.
ANA_LDO - 1.3 V, 4 mA max current for SAR and power management circuits (to be used only to supply VDDA_ANA)
USB_LDO - 1.3 V, 25 mA max current for USB core digital and PHY circuits (to be used only to supply USB_VDD1P3 and USB_VDDA1P3)

Could you measure the current values of the listed LDO pins in your schematic?
Unfortunately, dropout is usually only specified at the LDO’s maximum rated output current
Could you measure the volgate values before and after Ferrite bead FB15?
My assumption is that the reason for your problem may be a higher resistance on the LDO output.

    Best regards,
    Yanko
  • At last we found the reason...
DSP was actually interfaced directly to ADCs, only by means of the ADC OVERFLOW output
which was tied to one of the DSP Gpio pins, which was wrongly software configured as output as well...

    Classic line contemption problem.

Sorry for this waste of your attention.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

Thanks for sharing the actual problem and your solution.
