AM3517 external memory DDR/DDR2 1GByte or 2GByte

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3517

I have a question from a customer of mine.  It concerns an AM3517.  Customer wants to know it this device can address 1GByte or 2 GByte of external DDR/DDR2 memory.  Datasheet says 1GB.

****for reference****

Hello Gentlemen,

We are getting conflicting data on the addressable memory space of the AM3517.  The product preview document states a total of 1 GB for DDR, while the Tech Ref states a total of 2 GB.  Which is correct?

This is VERY important for us to know and we need to know yesterday.

Please respond as soon as possible with the actual addressable memory space.

Thanks,

  • Hello,

For the AM35x we support up to 1GB across 2 CS.  The thing to note is that loading becomes an issue.  We suggest that no more than 2 loads be connected to the Data lines, and to my knowledge there are currently no DRAM manufacturer's making LPDDR or DDR2 larger than 256MB per die.  I have seen at least one 512MB LPDDR that uses only 1 CS, but it is still a 2 die solution.

We are not able to support 2GB on the AM35x devices.  It is written in the Technical Reference Manual as 2GB because technically it can address 1GB per CS, but the loading makes this an impossible solution.
