Linux/AM5728: Omapdss_hdmi5 driver can't find audio interface

Part Number: AM5728

Tool/software: Linux

Hello,

We're having AM5728 for our products and we use Pulseaudio for playing tones on our system. We have QT based application running on top.

The problem is, sometimes after few hours the system is on, when app tries to play audio tones using QT's QSound class, audio does not play and we have below kernel error:

omapdss_hdmi5 58040000.encoder: ASoC: can't open interface 58040000.encoder: -1

Once this issue occurs, we also tried to play the audio through command-line and it could not play it.

Please find this attached Journal logs for details --->

  • More Info:

We have two audio sources, one is through Codec Chip and another is through HDMI. The error we see here are from HDMI, that I think may not be an issue. When I further investigate I found that the Pulseaudio behaving bad. Below is a log for it:

    root@raymond-gdm:~# aplay /opt/GDM/media/success_beep.wav

ALSA lib /media/dmaisuria/Storage/mgc/2015.12.150/mel/2015.12.150/meta-mentor/build/tmp/work/cortexa15hf-vfp-neon-mel-linux-gnueabi/alsa-plugins/1.0.29-r0/alsa-plugins-1.0.29/pulse/pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused

aplay: main:722: audio open error: Connection refused

    Thanks,

  • Hello Divyeshkumar,

I am looking into your issue.

    * Are you still having problems?

    * Is this a custom board or a TI board?

    * Any additional information I should know?

  • Hey Nick,

Thanks for looking into the matter.

It is a custom board designed by us. We investigated more in this issue and figured out that it has something to deal with Pulseaudio and QSound. Below is some info for your reference:

We have two audio sources to play the sound on in our system, one is the Codec chip based and another is the HDMI audio out.

System has both the audio sources as systemdefault. When App uses QSound to play audio tones, pulseaudio uses both the audio sources to play the tones.

Since we don’t have anything on HDMI out, when App plays tone we get below journal logs from Pulseaudio and Kernel:

    Dec 23 04:29:04 raymond-gdm kernel: omapdss_hdmi5 58040000.encoder: ASoC: can't open interface 58040000.encoder: -1

We get this same logs every time App plays tones fine using Qsound. We are using static Qsound play mechanism in our App which keeps the pulseaudio socket connection open forever in the background.

Now the issue is sometimes while the device is running, we have seen that  the App freezes (At least the GUI), we still have some threads of App running at the same time.

To check the issue, we kept logs in the App which will track the execution of the thread by logging the entry to a function and exit to a function, and we figured out that at the time the GUI freezes, app tried to play an audio tone.

We are not sure how Qsound is dealing with pulseaudio in the background and how the GUI freezes, but since our logs indicates the location of the freeze is tone playback from App, we have used “aplay” to bypass QSound.

Since aplay also uses pulseaudio at some level, as the countermeasure, we have hardcoded our soundcard with the Audio Codec Chip sound card using : “aplay –D sysdefault:CARD=RaymondGDM {TONE’s PATH}” and we use this command in our App.

    Hope this info will help.

    Thanks,

    Divyeshkumar

  • Hello Divyeshkumar,

I can help if the issue is related to the AM5728 - TI cannot really support pulseaudio or Qsound beyond getting it working on TI-designed boards though, so if the issue is in those areas you may need to check another forum.

    1) Is this your current issue?

kernel error "omapdss_hdmi5 58040000.encoder: ASoC: can't open interface 58040000.encoder: -1" occurs when trying to play audio tones. Audio tones are sent to both the Codec chip and the HDMI audio output.

    2) Your device tree info only lists information about the codec. Do you initialize the hdmi in your device tree? Sample snippets from the AM57xx GPEVM device tree are attached.

    3) Have you looked at these sections of Pulseaudio documentation to make sure you are configuring HDMI properly? Simultaneous HDMI and Analog Output and HDMI Output Configuration

    4) What version of Processor SDK are you using?

  • Hi Nick,

We replaced Qsound with aplay directly in our QT app. I guess there's some issue with the Qsound, the way it uses the Pulseaudio in the backend. We are still trying to figure out the root cause with Qsound that why it is failing on Pulseaudio.

    I appreciate your support.

    Thanks,
    Divyeshkumar
  • Hello Divyeshkumar,

Glad to hear that aplay is working. Let me know if you have questions we can help with.

    Regards,
    Nick
