High resolution, low frame rate with DaVinci

Hello all,

I have an application with low frame rate and high resolution (2fps / 5Mpixels mono) for an asset monitoring system. Can the TI API and DaVinci hardware effectively compress with H.264 on this data?

There are 4 cameras at this rate - can the TI API and DaVinci hardware effectively mux between cameras, with each camera at the above frame rates/resolution?

What gotchas can I expect when trying to implement this system?

Thanks.

-Andrew M

  • Hi,

DM368 platform wil be able to do H264 encode  of 5MPat 10fps, so having four streams at 2fps of 5Mp should not be an issue.

Let me know if this answers your query and if you have further queries.

    Regards,

    Raghu

  • Hi Raghu, thanks.

Does the TI software API now cater for such high resolutions? Also, how are multiple streams handled - are there FIFO/pipelining issues in the graphics hardware?

Is there a TI document which details this application?

    regards

    -Andrew

  • Current H264 encoder does not support resolution more than 1080P.

But we will be coming up with a reelase of megapixel codec by Oct end timeframe which will have this feature.

This wil have increased memory requirement to accomodate 5MP reoslution i.e. 15MB

  • Hi,

Just to add a word of caution- Raghu has mentioned about the encoder performance for 5MP YUV data. Multiple channel 5MP capture need to be thought about. There has to be an external FPGA or ASIC that will multiplex the channels and then a software code on DM36x to demux these 5MP channels is needed.

  • Hi Anshuman, Raghu,

the information is good to know, however is not factual or detailed enough to present to an end customer and contains no references to roadmaps, schedules etc.  To justify customer commitment to an architecture, eval tools etc would require a specific TI roadmap for these features and some analysis of whether the hardware is capable of this specific function. This is info in TI's domain.

I guess the real answer is "we don't know if it will work", so I will recommend the customer look at other solutions.

BTW The removal of DFAE access to TI staff  thru ESP is to the detriment of TI. This forum method does not allow the confidentiality nor the level of detail required to properly service end customers. Efficient demand creation involves confidential communications, detailed information and direct contact.

    Thank you for your responses,

    best regards,

    Andrew

  • Hi Andrew,

Please feel free to contact your local FAE/Sales and ask them to connect with me/Raghu. We can have a conference call if you would like to discuss more on this problem statement. We are sure we can meet your usecase, ofcourse we would need some sort of brainstorming to understand the customer requirement clearly, as well as options on doing high mega pixel multi-channel capture.

    Regards,

    Anshuman
