TMS320C6748: Which development board and emulator to go with?

Part Number: TMS320C6748
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAPL138, OMAP-L138, TMDSEMU110-U, TMDSEMU200-U, TMDSEMU560V2STM-UE, TMDSEMU560V2STM-U

Hello!

Greetings of the day.

I am trying to develop some audio filters using DSP, I am relatively new to DSP so I want to choose from TMS320C6748 Development kit or TMSLCDK138  development kit, which is more suitable for audio applications?

The board suggests that the only difference between the two is the processor utilized ie. one has TMS320C6748 on one and other has OMAPL138 on other; so is it possible that we can change the processor later on the kit?

Also while ordering it suggests that we require an emulator to start developing, So which is a suitable emulator for the same?

I searched and found XDS-100 supports both chips, TMS320C6748 and OMAPL138, but it's upgraded version XDS-110 doesn't  support OMAPL138 processor, please clarify on the same and suggest best suited option which has support for both.

Regards,

Puneet Chandhok

  • Hi,

The board suggests that the only difference between the two is the processor utilized ie. one has TMS320C6748 on one and other has OMAPL138 on other; so is it possible that we can change the processor later on the kit?

There is C6748 LCDK and OMAP-L138 LCDK. The processors utilized in both boards are different (TMS320C6748 and OMAP-L138 respectively. To be able to change the processors on the kit, you need to make sure they are pin to pin compatible. Compare Section 3.5 Pin Assignments in both Datasheets, and if they are the same then you can change the SoCs, but if not this is NOT possible.

Also while ordering it suggests that we require an emulator to start developing, So which is a suitable emulator for the same?

Supported emulators for both SoCs are listed here:

  • Hello Yordan,

The description on the page shows under the section of Recommended Alternative Parts is :TMS320C6748  -  DIFFERENT FUNCTIONALITY, pin for pin compatible. I will check in datasheet too.

    For Emulator:

The OMAP-L138 page shows it is supported by XDS110 Debug Probe, but on the XDS110 page it says under devices not supported section, that it does not support ARM9 processors such as OMAPL13X.

    kindly clarify for the same.

    Regards,

    Puneet

  • Hello Yordan,

I verified the datasheet and the pins are same, for TMS320C6748 and OMAPL138.
Just help me with the emulator. that would be great and kindly suggest some notes to read for implementation of filters for audio range.

    Regards,
    Puneet
  • Hi Puneet,

Both devices use the same emulators.

    OMAP-L138 supports:
    XDS110 JTAG Debug Probe TMDSEMU110-U Debug Probes/Analyzers
    XDS200 USB Debug Probe TMDSEMU200-U Debug Probes/Analyzers
XDS560v2 System Trace USB & Ethernet Debug Probe TMDSEMU560V2STM-UE Debug Probes/Analyzers
XDS560v2 System Trace USB Debug Probe TMDSEMU560V2STM-U Debug Probes/Analyzers

    TMS320C6748 supports:
    XDS110 JTAG Debug Probe TMDSEMU110-U Debug Probes/Analyzers
    XDS200 USB Debug Probe TMDSEMU200-U Debug Probes/Analyzers
XDS560v2 System Trace USB & Ethernet Debug Probe TMDSEMU560V2STM-UE Debug Probes/Analyzers
XDS560v2 System Trace USB Debug Probe TMDSEMU560V2STM-U Debug Probes/Analyzers

The processors are almost the same. The difference is that OMAP-L138 has ARM cortex + C6748 DSP, while TMS320C6748 has only a single C6748 DSP. OMAP-L138 supports both Linux & RTOS (because it has ARM cortex) and TMS320C6748 supports only RTOS.

The filter implementation will depend on your use case. You can search in this forum for some custom examples. TI does not provide sample codes, however you can have a look at the DSPLIB http://www.ti.com/tool/sprc265 and its user guide for some APIs.

    Yordan
  • Dear Yordan,

Thanks, I will surely look into the same and come back to you soon.
Please let me know how can I get free samples for evaluation purposes.

  • Dear Yordan,

Thanks for the links but when I checkout it says my account does not have access to free samples,

what is required to be able to be accessible to free samples.

  • Dear Yordan,

Warm wishes! Hope you are doing good.

I bought the TMS320C6748 LCDK  kit.

We connected it to our windows 10 system, along using the USB provided.

We downloaded the Teraterm and tried installing CCS provided with the kit.

The CCS is not getting installed, gives error of OS not supported, in registry. and the Teraterm screen doesn't show up as mentioned in the quick user guide.

Kindly, help us resolve the issue.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Puneet

  • Which CCS version are you using? Which SDK are you trying to use?
For TI RTOS SDK you can see all available download links here:
