TMS320C6678: SGMII connection for SFP module

Part Number: TMS320C6678

Hi,

My customer is considering using C6678 with SPF module , just like AFBR-571x (From Avago :Compliant to IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet (1.25GBd) 1000BaseSX) and they are wondering if C6678 SGMII differential signals could be connected to SPF module directly without any termination. Do you have any suggestions? Also, do you have any recommended schematic for such SPF module ?

Another question is about sample code : C6678 has 2 SGMII ports and they want to use one port for external PHY and other for SPF module. In this use case, from my understanding, what they can refer as a sample code is PA example (PA_multicoreExample_evmc6678_C66BiosExampleProject) and as for NDK, it does not support multiple ports at once --  Is my understanding correct ?

NK

  • Hi,

    We're looking into this.

  • Hi Naoki,
It is not clear from the documentation for the AFBR-571x but I don't think that the SPF module electrical interface is directly compatible with SGMII. The C6678 certainly does not support the hot-swap capability specified by SPF. The customer will need to do some additional research on the requirements for the SPF interface. The only SPF implementation we have used is with the 10Gbit Ethernet on the K2 products. That required a retimer to support the connection and the hot-swap requirement.

  • Hi Bill,

Thanks for your quick reply. There is no use case for hot-swap in their application. In that case, is it possible to connect directly ? In electrical point of view, can you show C6678`s SGMII specification in order to ask the module vender if it has a compatibility or not ?

My customer is finding a solution to work with SPF modules. Do you have any experience to work with SPF on C667x platform ?

Also, I asked about sample code but do you have any comments on this ?

    Best Regards,
    NK

  • Hi,

The SGMII interface is compliant with the standards defined in section 6.1 of the SerDes Implementation Guide for KeyStone I Devices. We have no experience with connections to SPF modules using the C667x SoC. Sample code for the connection to an Ethernet PHY is include in the Processor SDK release but there isn't an example code for connecting to anything else.

If the SPF module is compliant with SGMII then a direct connection is possible. The customer should talk with the SPF manufacturer to see if that is the case.

    Regards, Bill

  • Hi Bill,

I suggested the same to the customer. They would try to find other solutions without SPF module in their system. Thanks for your support anyway.
