Linux/AM5728: Gigabit Ethernet on eth1 not working

Part Number: AM5728

Tool/software: Linux

Hi,

I have a custom am5728 board and I can get a linkup for 1G on eth0 but can't on eth1. I am using the same link partner on both and a 1G switch. When I use the sitara eval board to cross-reference, I can see both the links get up but eth0 shows 1G and eth1 shows 100mbps. How can I enable eth1 for 1G? Please let me know.

  • Please complete the following checklist and post the results here: processors.wiki.ti.com/.../5x_CPSW
  • Hi Eeshan,

In addition to posting the checklist results that Biser mentioned the first thing you need to look at is the PHY configuration on eth1. The results from ethtool are indicating that the supported PHY modes only shows support for up to 100Mbps on eth1. Since auto-negotiation is use the speed is negotiated before any drivers can have an effect. In this case if the PHY "thinks" it is only configured for 100Mbps then it behaved correctly. Comparing the ethtool results for eth0 and eth1 shows the PHY on eth0 supports 1G, the PHY on eth1 does not.

    Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
    100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full

The ethtool is showing that both PHYs are detecting the link partner which is the switch if I understand the topology correctly. Is the link up problem you are mentioning also include not getting an IP address for the both ports, assuming dual mac mode? If that is the case please note that with both ports plugged into the same switch will probably not get an ip address for both ports. Each port needs to be on its own subnet.

    Best Regards,
    Schuyler
  • Hi,

So on my am5728 sitara evaluation module, I connect to the two ethernet ports one at a time individually. I take the cable and put it into eth0 and I see a 1G link. I then take the same cable and put it into eth1 and i get a 100Mb/s link. Both the phys attached to eth0 and eth1 are the exact same, KSZ9031. These are gigabit phys.

Attached you can find all of the information that was requested. I am using TI SDK 4.00.00.04. I am running on the am5728 evm (not custom board):

  • Also, the image that I load onto the sitara eval board is by using the create-sdcard script and selecting from pre-built images. Using 4.00.00.04.

Any thoughts? Please let me know with what you think of the results posted above. Thanks!

  • Hi,

The ethtool output is still showing that the PHY is only indicating support for 100Mbps. The TI EVM has 2 1 G phys on it. The PHY strapping should be setting the PHY speeds supported. One possibility is that something is going wrong with the auto-negotiation sequence to not allow both the link partner and eth1 to show the possible speeds in ethtool.

What does ethtool eth0 show when you plugin eth0 and eth1 together? I could be wrong but I am looking to see that eth0 at least links with eth1 at the expected speed.

    Regards,
    Schuyler
  • Hi,

I connected eth0 and eth1 together and both the interfaces linked at 100Mbps speeds. I'm still not sure why the 2nd port seems to be only capable of up to 100mbps. Even though both the phys are configured the same way when I look at the micrel.c phy driver. Let me know what you think, I really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Eeshan

  • Hi Eeshan,
A colleague pointed out that the on the AM5728 there is an errata that was issued for 1.1 silicon that for port that is eth1. The DTS for the board file limits the phy speed to 100 Mbps. The DTS file that limits the speed is in arch/arm/boot/dts/am57xx-beagle-x15.dts. The node phy1 sets the speed limitation.

The errata holds for silicon 1.1. On the evm you have could you please use this command to read this register 0x4AE0C204:

    devmem2 0x4AE0C204

Thank you for being patient while we looked at this, I was aware of the speed limitation on the EVM.

    Best Regards,
    Schuyler
