New Output Display on DM6467

Hi,

I am new to DM6467 and recently just receive the evaluation kits. Initially I can get the display output on screen but after change the display connection a few times I can no longer get the display on screen anymore.

I found some warning during the power up message through Serial port, please help me to verify could these warning is the cause of the not output display and how should i resolve these issue.

Thank you very much.

  • It looks like you may have corrupted your file system; from the log above it appears you are loading the filesystem from your hard-disk-drive (HDD), but the system is failing to find key components of your file-system.  Have you gone thru the Getting Started Guide (GSG) yet, in particular chapter 4 which covers software installation.  You should find isntructions there on how to restore your HDD contents.  The GSG will also show you how to load the file system via ethernet using NFS protocol (an alternate method more commonly used during development phase).

  • Hi Juan Gonzales,

Yes, I have install the software as followed chapter 4 guidelines. I have also perform a HDD restore from the 2nd partition inside the evaluation board as in A.7.1 -Restoring From Target EVM HDD partition.

In fact, the above boot up message is copied after I have perform all the action above (hdd restore). But the same warning appeared even I perform that.

  • can you try loading your file system via NFS (instructions in GSG) to see if you get past this error (and verify that it is not something other than file-system causing this)?  Also, what dvsdk release are you using with our EVM?

  • Hi,

I have tried to load my file system via NFS as well (GSG section 4.3.6 Testing the Shared file system) and the same error still appear. Currently I am using dvsdk 1.40.02.33

  • It appears it is missing some of the kernel modules from the file-system; did you complete the following steps in the GSG?

    host $ make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm_v5t_le- modules
    host $ make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm_v5t_le- INSTALL_MOD_PATH=/home/<useracct>/workdir/filesys modules_install

  • Hi,

You are right, I had miss out the above lines. However, after execute these lines, I still unable to get any picture on output display connector.

Below is the output message during boot up using nfs method

  • When you load fiel system via NFS, the demos do not run automatically; you must run them manually, see section 3.4 of the GSG.

FYI, in newer dvsdks, the drivers give you more flexibility for configuration during boot process and hence you may need to specify additional bootargs arguments, but these are described in the corresponding GSG and other docs included with newer DVSDKs.

  • Hi,

I have try to run the demo (decoding using internal file dust_1080i_30fps.m2v) and can see the output on my hyperterminal the demo is running, I will paste the output message for your verification tomorrow.

As I am new to Da Vinci platform, is there any document that have steps by steps instruction that ENSURE picture display that I can refer? Or is there any 'simpler' way that I can revert all my evaluation module back to factory state in order to get back the picture.

    Thank you very much.

  • If you just want to verify your hardware is ok, there is some hardware level test code you can get from http://support.spectrumdigital.com/boards/evmdm6467/revf/ ; however, these tests will require a JTAG emulator and CCS to run.

If you are not getting any errors in the log when you run loadmodules or the demos, I would assume this may be a hardware issue (loose cables, loose connectors on board or display, display not being HD capable...).

If you have not messed with your hard-drive files, you can change your bootargs again to boot from the hard-drive (see section A.3.1 of GSG); if you believe you have trashed the contents of your hard-drive and you want to restore them, see appendix A6 on GSG.  As you can see, there is a good amount of information on the GSG.

  • Hi,

I do not have JTAG emulator to test it.

I have probe on the Y-component output but did not get any 720p video signal from there. So definitely the board did not output the signal.

I also have try A.7.2 Restoring From Host Linux Workstation File System. After I perfrom A.7.2, the same error appear(FATAL: Could not open /lib/modules/2.6.10_mvl401-davinci_evm-PSP_01_30_00_082/modules.dep.temp for writing: No such file or directory), but i did as before (

I have probe on the Y-component output but did not get any 720p video signal from there. So definitely the board did not output the signal.

What output connector are you using for display (component or composite)?  The boot logs you have posted thus far suggest you are using composite and the decode demo run log also suggests NTSC-D1 display normally associated with composite, but your comment above suggests you may be looking at component output.  Can you check composite output and see if there is anything there?

  • Hi Juan,

I have tested on composite signal but also no signal output. For your information, currently I have two probe probing on Y(component) and CVBS and that I can observe if there is any signal from any of the output.

Then I try to change the bootargs during powerup to 'davinci_enc_mngr.ch0_output=COMPONENT davinci_enc_mngr.ch0_mode=720P-60' but still no signal on component side.

However, I manage to get an output from CVBS when i execute example application saDisplay (i found the application inside foler /home/ctkian/dvsdk_1_40_02_33/PSP_01_30_00_082/example/dm646x/Executables)

  • Try using COMPONENT1 in bootargs; this is a long-shot, but it is what is normally used by other platforms for 720p (COMPONENT is normally used for 480p..).

  • Hi Juan,

I have give it try, but still no picture. And I think the system did not recognize COMPONENT1, cause when i set it as COMPONENT1, during power up it will shown COMPOSITE instead. I try key in on '/sys/class/davinci_display/ch0/output' and it return some error message, thus confirming the system do not recognize COMPONENT1.

  • It turns out you do not need to specify the encoder manager outpu type (COMPONENT) in dvsdk 1.40; the following bootargs described on the GSG should be enough (your ip address and path may vary)

       bootargs=console=ttyS0,115200n8 noinitrd rw ip=dhcp root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=192.168.1.101:/home/user/dm6467/dvsdk_1_40_00_21/filesys,nolock mem=120M davincihd_capture.channel0_numbuffers=4

The key to this mistery is the options you provide the decode demo (assumes NTSC by default); the options are described in the decode.txt file which accompany the demo, but try the following

       ./decode -v data/videos/dust_1080i_30fps.m2v -y 5

    It worked for me

  • I ran into something similar.  In my case, it turned out to be the order that the 3 component cables are connected to the EVM.   There was some confusion on my part as the order of the inputs on the EVM (R - G - B) was different from the order expected by my HD source and display (R - B - G).  I had inadvertently used the "right order" the first time and then after that used the same order as the HD source/display without actually checking the order on the EVM when I reconnected things.

It's probably something different in your case but thought I'd mention this.

       -Robert

  • Hi Juan,

I have tried that and it does not work for me. Do you think you can send all the file in /opt/dvsdk/dm6467/* to me(tkcheng@asd.com.my),excluding the video files.  I saw that you are using dvsdk_1_40_00_21 while I am using version dvsdk_1_40_02_33.

  • Due to export control restrictions, you will need to request this via www.ti.com/support.

Also, can you provide a log of your current error?  what u-boot version are you using (should be display in boot log)?  I assume you are running loadmodules.sh before running the demo manually; if so, do you see any errors while running loadmodules.sh?
