AM5708: Interfacing to Two Cameras

Part Number: AM5708
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM5718,

Hi team,

We are interested in using the AM5708 in an application where we need to interface to two cameras and store the video on two SD cards (similar to a DVR application). Looking at the datasheet for the AM5708, I see that it says "The CAL has two serial camera interfaces (primary and secondary)" but I see no mention of the the secondary interface. Can we support two camera inputs on the AM5708 or do we have to move up to the AM5718?

Regards,

Akash Patel

  • Hey Akash,

The CAL module does have two interfaces but only the primary is pinned out and available to use on AM5708. You'll need the larger package of the AM5718 with enough pins for both interfaces to be used. Please see the top of page 7 of the device datasheet as well as the "CAMSS Block Diagram" in the technical reference manual for details on the pins available.

    Regards,
    Ahmad

  • Hi Ahmad,

Thanks for the response. If we have support for maximum two interfaces across our AM57x8 devices, how do we support more than 2 streams of simultaneous video encoding as in the post from Rogerio here: e2e.ti.com/.../2012031?

Also, what applications is the Video Input Module (VIP) used for that supports up to 4 four multiplexed input ports?

    Regards,
    Akash

  • If you require a camera that supports the CSI-2 serial interface then you'll need the CAMSS module and the number of pins available depend on AM570x vs AM571x. The VIP is another module that provides up to 4 other camera ports: VIN1A, VIN1B, VIN2A, VIN2B. These are parallel interface and the pins available also depend on what other pins are used up. Additionally the VINxB ports are 8-bit max.
