Linux/AM3358: Point to point Ethernet connection

Part Number: AM3358

Tool/software: Linux

I am directly connecting two Beaglebone Blacks (Debian 3.8.13-bone70, SMSC LAN8710/LAN8720 driver) via Ethernet. If the cable is disconnected and reconnected, the connection will not be restored. So far, I can only get a reconnection by rebooting one of the nodes. I suspect the problem is that link pulses (perhaps part of auto negotiation) at boot up and are not sent later. Is there a way to force a reconnect attempt?
