66AK2H06: Heat Sink and Fan of EVMK2H

Guru 15520 points
Part Number: 66AK2H06

Hi,

My customer have following questions about heat sink and fan on the EVMK2H(66AK2Hxx EVM).
I'm asking to manufacture of EVMK2H, but there are no response so far.
Could you please support us?

Q1. We would like to know which manufacture and the part number of the heat sink
and the fan which are installed on the EVM.
I checked the BOM list of the EVM but I couldn't find it from the list.

Q2. How did you select the heat sink and fan which are installed on the EVM?
We want to know the selection conditions.

best regards,
g.f.

  • Hi,

    Regarding question 1:

I disassembled the fan mounted on my K2H EVM and here is what it says on the part:

As for the heat sink any manufacturer should do.

Q2. How did you select the heat sink and fan which are installed on the EVM?
We want to know the selection conditions.

The heat sink is selected (material and size) based on the Thermal Design Guide:

Check section 7 PCB Thermal Design Considerations.

  • g.f.,

The heatsink implemented on the EVMK2H is a custom design created from a standard, extruded aluminum heatsink.  Any manufacturer of heatsinks can create one for you once you have your thermal requirements defined.

Defining the requirements is the important part of this process.  This is discussed in the document that Yordan referenced.  The JEDEC values for the Theta-JB and Theta-JC associated with the 66AK2H devices are listed in the Data Manual.  The Delphi thermal model for the 66AK2H device is contained on the device product page.  This can be used with thermal modeling packages to validate all requirements are met.

One additional note: the heatsink and fan solution implemented on the EVM is very conservative - i.e., over-designed.  This EVM design pre-dated initial device samples and early samples routinely consume much more power that production devices.  For operation in a nominal ambient environment, the cooling solution (heatsink and fan) do not need to be this large.
