DM365 VPFE for 14-bit monochrome camera and H264 encoder

Can DM365 VPFE support 14-bit monochrome parallel digital interface without losing resolution ? I read the VPFE user's guide and found that the 16-bit generic ycbcr is probably the right configuration. But it means it only support 8-bit Y. Or it still can take all 14-bits but just need to specify V4L2_PIX_FMT_Y16 format for capture process before sending to encode process (H264) ?

You can capture the data through Camera interface if the data comes with Vertical, Horizontal Sync and Clock by treating it as Raw data. It can be up to 16bit.

But ISP (including Resizer) cannot handle 14bit Monochrome data.

Can I treat it like raw data even though it is not Bayer pattern or any other camera raw data pattern ? It is simple 14-bit mono digital video interface with V,H,CLK, FRAME. We do not need to process such video data in DM365 but just need to compress it and stream out through RTP.

Yes, you can save Data to memory (up to 16bit) by selecting YCbCr16bit mode. The engine doesn't know whether the data is YCbCr, Y or any general data.

Once the data is in memroy, codec setting is fully independent (I don't have much idea of 14bit H.264 support).

TI only supports H264 input format with YUV420SP. I think the resizer can convert YUV422->YUV420SP but the resizer does not support 16-bit or 14-bit monochrome input.

On a related topic, we have a 14-bit monochrome camera and would need to get the resulting image in YUV422 format. Even after reading this thread it's a little unclear to me how to convert 14-bit raw monochrome images to YUV422. What is the path through the VPFE on the DM365?

I think you can just connect most significant 8-bit of 14-bit to Y of VPFE and throw away 6-bits.

Again, the H/W doesn't know the data format, but as you set it as YUV, it stores 16bit data into memory.

Now, you have Y data in memory, but none of our H/W handles 14bit Y, although the data looks like YUV420 as Y is in one area.

I don't believe our codec can handle more than 8bit Y data.

If you consider using H.264 on 14bit Y data, then I believe it is not possible.
