Blackhawk USB510 or Spectrum Digital XDS510 PLUS USB?

Hello everybody,

we want to buy a xds510 class emulator but it's not easy to decide which one to buy. I've read that the Blackhawk USB510 should be a lot faster than a Spectrum Digital XDS510, but i can't find any infos how the newer Spectrum Digital XDS510 PLUS compares to the other models. Can someone help us?

Thanks

  • Personally, I do not believe you will find much difference in 510 series of emulators; you may want to ask Spectrum digital what the PLUS gets you.  If you are looking for speed, the XDS560R supports high speed RTDX, which will be faster than the regular RTDX found in most (if not all) 510 series emulators.

That said, I would also make sure that the JTAG emulator I am choosing supports the processor I intend on working with and not choose the JTAG emulator on its own.

  • We'll use the DM642. Both Emulators support this processor. Our decision went to the 510 class because we don't need the best, but like others, we want to get the most (in terms of speed and of course usability) out of the emulator's cost.

  • I have personally only used XDS510USB from Spectrum Digital; therefore, my advice is somewhat limited.  I did want to mention the Hish Speed RTDX in my previous post for the benefit of others that may read this post in the future.  If you come across more information between the performance differences among 510 emulators, it would be great if you would share that with this community.

  • It sounds like this is a debate of which drivers are best. Unfortunately I don't think I have ever seen any studies over these two emulators to determine which runs better. The technology should be identical (or close enough), so I don't think you'll see any huge leaps and bounds in terms of performance between the two. But this is just my 2 cents.

  • I believe for the DM642 you will not see any difference between the XDS510USB and XDS510USB PLUS emulators, based on their description I believe that the PLUS only is adding additional adaptive clocking support for the ARM (it seems to support the 20 pin connector natively), so for a DSP part like DM642 there may not be any appreciable difference apart from the potential future benefit of ARM adaptive clocking. You may want to ask Spectrum Digital (maybe point out this thread here) to see what their take is on the additional benefits for the PLUS version.

  • Years ago I did some benchmarking comparisons of the load speed of BH USB510 vs SD XDS510USB.  I forget the exact numbers but the Blackhawk emulator was MUCH faster (something like 5x).  I just did some quick looks in order to figure out what the difference is between XDS510USB and XDS510USB PLUS.  It looks to me like the new XDS510USB PLUS is now on par with what the Blackhawk USB510 offered years ago.  Namely, it now has USB 2.0 high speed support (480 MHz) vs the full speed support (12 MHz) that was in the original product.  Also, it supports 1.8V operation and adaptive clocking.

So my best guess would be that the BH USB510 and SD XDS510USB PLUS are more or less equivalent in performance.  If there's a significant price difference I'd get the cheaper of the two.  I do NOT recommend the original SD XDS510USB as it is inferior to these choices.  All other things equal I've never actually used the new SD emulator so I can for sure recommend the BH and likely recommend the SD.
