multiple HD stream H.264 encoding possible with DM6467T?

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Hello all,

I had a question regarding the H.264 encoding performance of the DM6467T. From the information I have seen, the part is definitely capable of encoding a single stream of either 720p60, 1080i60, 1080p30, or 1080p60. What is not clear to me is what capabilities it has for multiple streams. From the data I have seen, it should be capable of two streams of the resolutions I mentioned, except for 1080p60 obviously. In BT.656 (8b) mode, 720p60, 1080i60, and 1080p30 all would run at 148.5MHz (750x1650x60x2=148.5M, 1125x2200x30x2=148.5M, 562.5x2200x60x2=148.5M), which is under the 150MHz limit of the T part. Also, since the part is capable of doing 1080p60 encoding, I am assuming that it should be capable of moving the data and encoding two of any of the other streams (with a moderate amount software work). Does anyone know of anything that would keep this from being possible: the VPIF, DDR bandwidth, or the encoder driver/DSP? Has anyone tried this, to either success or failure? Any information would be helpful.

Thank you,

-Scott

  • Scott,

Did you read any literature that claims that DM6467T can achieve 1080p60 encoding? Even without any margins we will consume ~100% of the Hdvicp cycles for 1080p60, so I do not think 1080p60 in a practical system will be possible on a single DM6467T.

The T can definitely do 1080p30, 1080i60, 720p60..no issues there. But note that only one of the 2 Hdvicps in DM6467T can do encoding. The other Hdvicp is a decode only Hdvicp without the capability to do Motion Estimation and Intra Prediction Estimation. So 2 channels of 720p60/1080p30 is not feasible. The other issue could be the DSP...it will not be able to support 2x720p60 or 2x1080p30. Of course we can still have multiple channels of lower resolution or lower frame rate (for e.g. 2 channels of 720p30 is very much OK).

  • Kapil,

Thank you for the information. I searched around for more documentation and I was apparently just misinformed about the 1080p60 encoding. It is good to hear that the part does support 2 streams of 720p30.

    Thanks for your help,
