AM3354: AM335x can‘t boot from S34ML04G200TFI00

Hi TI Experts,

Please help us analyze the following problems:

To address nandflash bit flip, we are planning enable the “ecc done by internal ROM” mode.

But in the mode,AM335x can boot from Micron MT29F4G08ABADAWPD normally,but can not boot from Cypress S34ML04G200TFI00.

According datasheet,we found a ddifference between MT29F4G08ABADAWPD and S34ML04G200TFI00.

S34ML04G200TFI00 memory array:2KBytes + 128 Bytes spare area

MT29F4G08ABADAWPD memory array:2KBytes + 64 Bytes spare area

Pls let me know if the spare area size is the cause of boot failure and how to solve it.

Hi,

Yes, this is the root cause. For 64 bytes spare area the ROM code expects BCH-8 ECC correction. For 128 bytes BCH-16 is expected. This is the flow diagram:

Is the picture in the “AM335x and AMIC110 Sitara™ Processors Technical Reference Manual”（SPRUH73P）？I can not find it.

I want to know if bch16 mode is only suitable for 4KB page size with 128Bytes spare area.

Is the bch mode determined only by spare area size？

S34ML04G200TFI00 memory array:2KB + 128 Bytes spare area

MT29F4G08ABADAWPD memory array:2KB + 64 Bytes spare area

OK, sectors per page are equal to page size /512 = 4 in both cases.
The decision is made based on spare bytes >= sectors *26 (in both cases 4 *26 = 104)
S34ML04G200TFI00: 128 > 104 so BCH-16 is used.
MT29F4G08ABADAWPD: 64 < 104 so BCH-8 is used.

This flow diagram is available in the AM437x TRM Rev. H (Figure 5-15 on page 210. It's valid for AM335x too.

I know how ROM gets page size:4th NAND ID.
How does the ROM get the spare size?5th NAND ID?
What is the data definition for 5th NAND ID?

ROM code gets the Nandflash parameter first using ONFI command.

If the ONFI Read ID command fails (it will be the case with any device not supporting ONFI) then the
device is reset again with polling for device to be ready (with 200ms timeout). Then, the standard Read ID
(command 90h / address 00h) is sent.

If the NAND is not ONFI compliant, then Table 26-14 applies, based on what Device ID is read (2nd byte of the ID byte stream).

Yes.S34ML04G200TFI00 is ONFI compliant.
How can I write mlo to nandflash in bch16 mode?Is there any demo code?

You haven't mentioned the software you are using. If using U-Boot, you need to configure it in am335x-evm.h within the U-Boot sources typically. You probably have BCH8 set now, and you need to change it to BCH16.

I hope this resolves your issue.
