Linux: Can I use TI Linux device driver source code to create drivers for another OS?

Tool/software: Linux

Hi,

If I wanted to create Sitara device drivers for an OS other than Linux, can I simply take and use the Linux source code and compile/modify it? I looked thru the SW manifest and also looked at the source file header information of a couple drivers as an example. I see most of them are covered under GPLv2. I read up on GPLv2 and it talks about redistributing and modifying free of charge as long as you keep the licensing info in there and I guess list the changes. What's not clear is, does freely modify include building for another OS? What restrictions are there? Do the newly modified files have to be made public afterwards?

Does the fact that many of the driver files were created by TI have any significance? Would TI have the ability to give for example one of it's customers permission to use the driver source code for another OS?

Thanks

  • Brad,

This is mainly a licensing interpretation issue and each company will have to make their own call on it. I hope you understand that we can't provide legal/licensing support on this forum.

I believe the license is more important than who releases it, so I'm not sure it coming from TI matters or not.
