We are planning to use M58PR001LE96ZAC5 flash from Numonyx as the boot device.

Just want to ask, if the bootloader place any requirement on the flash memory device to be used ? For example M58PR001LE96ZAC5 flash, will it be compatible with L138 ARM bootloader  ?

If there is such a requirement, from which document that I can obtain this information ?

When reading from the flash it just appears as a directly addressed nonvolatile async memory, so there are no compatibility requirements from the bootloader point of view.

Just wonder how the bootloader know how to configure different types of flash.

For reading, no configuration needs to be done and it behaves just like an SRAM. For writing, special commands need to be written before data can be written. The bootloader does not write any data, it only reads.

Assuming we have the flash connected properly to L138, the flash is empty, and we need to flash images (UBL, VxWorks bootrom) onto the flash device.

Are the steps described in the below wiki is how we flashing the images onto the blank new flash device ?

Yes you should be able to follow those instructions to get your blank flash device programmed.

I have been working on other stuffs for the last few months. I am coming back for this now.

For your last reply, no configuration is needed for reading the NOR flash.

I am a bit doubt on that as the NOR flash is connected with EMA_CS[2] of the EMIFA peripheral. Isn't EMIFA need to be initialized and configured first before the first read ? Just to double confirm again.

The second question, is about the memory map (Table3-4. Top Level Memory Map) in SPRS586B-JUNE 2009-REVISED AUGUST 2010.

0x6000 0000   0x61FF FFFF   32M   EMIFA async data (CS2)

Is this saying that only 32M of the flash is addresable by the EMIFA ? Because we are using 1Gb NOR flash, which is 128M.

If this true, how can I address the rest of the flash ??? I mean how do map the 128M into the memory map since the window provided for CS2 is only 32M ???
