AM5749: SSD with M.2 PCIe NVMe interface

Hello,

I saw the schematic of the eval board of the AM572x where both  mini PCIe and mSATA connectors are located. These form factors seems not to be a good choice for new design.

1. I'm looking for application notes that could help me to interface the AM5749 to a M.2 2242 (or higher size) form factor with PCIe controller.

2. Also, I'm wondering if the PCIe Gen3 x1 controller of the CPU is compatible with the SSD cards which are x2, x4, x8, or x16 compliant. Is it possible to connect 1 lane of the controller to the first lane of the SSD card only? Does it work?

    We do not have any application notes for this implementation.

    From a PCIe perspective, I don't see why it wouldn't work, but this isn't something we have tested internally and I haven't seen it tried by customers (that said I usually don't hear about problem-free implementations). The PCIe specification requires that all cards function in x1 mode so I would expect it to work in at least a limited fashion. If you are serious about moving forward I'd suggest obtaining a AM57xx IDK board as it has a standard PCIe slot with which you could test this topology.

    Please also note that AM57xx is PCIe GEN2 only. You listed GEN3.

    Hi,

    We already got one 5728 EVM board. The form factor included is a mPCIe that is PCIe x1 (only one lane) compliant. But this techno is no longer recommanded for new design. So that I would like to implement the new M.2 form factor that is much more recommanded.

    I read again the technical specification and I saw that the CPU is able to operatate in dual lane (PCIe x2 as expected for the M.2 2242 SSD card). PCIe_SS1 can be configurate in dual-lane mode.

    Hi Sylvain,
    You are correct, one of the available SerDes configurations for AM572x is PCIe GEN2 x2 (two 5GT/s lanes).
