AM5706: Best firmware approach for USB 3 audio device

Part Number: AM5706

Hello all,

I am investigating using an AM5706 as the controller for a USB 3 audio device running Yocto.

I'd like some guidance about the best approach for configuring the firmware for this device. There are quite a few possibilities: choice of USB drivers, OS configuration and modules, BIOS configuration options, etc.

It's also not clear what a good EVM board choice would be; I haven't seen any boards with AM57 family chips which support operation as a USB 3 device.

Are many customers using these chips for USB 3 devices? If so, what are the most common tools and device configurations? Are there any common gotchas or other factors I should keep in mind while making these decisions?

Apologies for the open ended questions. I'd appreciate any guidance you can provide to constrain my choices and help guide me to a suitable configuration for my product.

Thanks very much.

  • Rob,

Thanks for you questions. As far as software, there are two basic choices, Linux or RTOS. For USB Audio, I'd say your best choice would be Linux. Is this acceptable to you or did you prefer something else?

Unfortunately, our expert is away for the holidays and will return in the new year. We will get you some feedback as soon as we can upon their return.

    Thank you.

  • Thank you Ron. I'll be using Linux for this project so I'd love to know which USB interface drivers you would recommend and how best to structure the USB firmware. Any recommendations your expert could provide would be fantastic.

  • Hi Rob,

    Sorry for the late response.

As Ron mentioned above, Linux would the better choice. It is not clear to me if you want the AM57x USB3.0 to be an audio device or audio host, but the Linux kernel provides the UAC support for both host or device mode, you only have to develop your audio application as if for typical sound card.

Yes, we had many customers using AM57x USB 3.0 in both device and host mode. Please check the USB System Design training videos as in the link below.

Hopefully this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
