  • Hi,

The first thing to look is why this message is happening, the other MDIO errors could be a result of this one:

    [ 1.833512] davinci_mdio: probe of 48485000.mdio failed with error -5

This is an IO error with on the MDIO bus.  This could be due to PHY issues such as not resetting, strapping not correct, biasing. These

Try looking at this link concerning a solution to see if this is similar to the issue that you are seeing.

    - Missing resistor

You will probably need to contact the PHY vendor for additional debug suggestions.

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • hi,

we made wrong selection in pinmux for MDIO_D it is defined as output instead of input.
now, MDIO is detected. But we have an issue of ping
it is not pinging the data with other devices

  • Hi,

please make it as early possible, phy detected but it is not pinging.

  • Hi,
In the checklist provided earlier in the thread by Biser was a check for link detection using ethtool. Without a link detected the ARP and the ping request packets will not be sent.

If you look at ethtool eth0 the last line in the output is if the link is detected or not. If it is not detected you will need to review everything about concerning the PHY. Check things like if the PHY is showing up in the boot log, does the ethtool eth0 return the expected strappings of the PHY.

    Best Regards,
    Schuyler

  • Hi,

Thank you for the attachment, this indicates that a link partner is detected which is a critical first step. I noticed this is on eth1,is eth0 connected as well? If it is I would recommend disconnecting eth0 while debugging eth1. Which device is initiating the ping, the link partner or your board? Could you provide a topology of how the interfaces are connected with the link partner?

The triage checklist also serves as a guide on how to do some preliminary debug. Here some steps to follow:

    - What is the boot log indicating on the network interfaces? (Only the output of ethtool was attached in the last post)
    - With the previous post you have established that the link is detected.
    - How is your interface getting an ip address?
    - The packets need to be verified that they are leaving the interface. This can be done by the steps posted in the checklist or by using wireshark on the link partner, which hopefully is a Linux. When using wireshark you will see that for a ping to work there will be an ARP process to get the MAC address of the device being pinged before you see the ICMP request/response sequence.

    Best Regards,
    Schuyler

    hi,

please find the boot log  for complete log.

it is configured as point to point with static IP address on both sides.

we tried ping from both sides

  • Hi,

Thank you for the log. In the previous post I recommended that the packets need to be verified that they are leaving the interface if you are running the ping command on the AM57x.

Following the checklist link from earlier in the post use the ethtool -S eth1 to look at TX packet count. This is the MAC level statistics, this means that the packets were at least submitted to the HW for transmission. You should be able to see roughly the same RX count on the link partner using the same ethtool -S command assuming that the link partner is running Linux. If you don't see the link showing the RX count increasing on the link partner then something could be possibly going wrong on the AM57x board. A quick reminder, does the link partner work? Summarizing this scenario a little more, if the AM57x is showing an increasing TX packet count and the link partner is not showing a similar RX count increase then one area to check is looking around the PHY for possible issues.

Some of the issues to look at are any errors being reported by the ethtool -S <interface> command on the Link partner. Are there any crc errors etc being reported. Again the best tool to use here is wireshark or tcpdump on the link partner to look at the packets coming out of the AM572x.

You didn't mention the topology, how are eth0 and eth1 connected. Does ping work on eth0?

    Regards,
    Schuyler

we have configured ethernet in dual mac mode.

please find the attached results for ethtool -S  on both target and link partner side.

  • Hi,

Thank you for the results of the ethtool command. The link partner is reporting 0 received packets and several errors on the reception. This might be one area to look at to understand why the link partner is showing errors and what those errors really means. The rx_errors could might be a summation of several different types of rx errors.

    rx_packets: 0
    rx_errors: 326

The target ethtool results looked ok, no errors reported on the reception side.

These results are showing is that something could be wrong on the tx side on the target between the mac and the PHY and all the way to the link partner. A broad area still. The target believes it sent the packets and the link partner did not see any good packets but a lot of rx errors. Wireshark or tcpdump will not help here to look at the packets since the link partner NIC will drop the rx packets with errors. My best suggestion is look at the PHY and verify both the analog side and the digital side of the PHY and perhaps contact the PHY manufacturer for suggestions on how to isolate potential signaling issues.

    Best Regards,
    Schuyler
  • Hi,
Since we have not heard back regarding the last post I will assume that you were able to move past the issue and close the thread as resolved. If that is not case you will still be able to respond to this thread or start a new one.

  • hi,

issue is alive, we are not getting ping between link partner and target. Hardware is verified again and the same setup is working in other card.

  • Hi,
In the previous post the link partner was not receiving any packets, is that still the case? How was the hardware verified? Could you please the setup is working in the other card?
