A new question about H264 encoder in DM365

Hello all,

while reading at the DM365 specifications, i can read that the power consumption is 850mW in HD encoding (I guess it is 720p @ 30fps). I have a question about this measurement. How was it measured ? Was it the total : DM365+DDR2 memories OR only DM365 device to which we'll have to add the memories power consumption. Very important for system design.

Thank you.

I am not sure where you see the 850mW figure, it does not seem to be in the datasheet or the power application note, though I can say HD encoding does imply 720p@30fps in regards to the DM365.

I suppose this depends on whare you are seeing the figure, but in general the power measurements would have been with actual silicon as opposed to simulations, at least this is the case with the power application note.

In general we only specify the DM365 power itself, this includes the DDR peripheral on the DM365 but not the external DDR2 memories themselves, as DDR2 modules can vary in power consumption from device to device and vendor to vendor, TI cannot effectively characterize them in the documentation.

thank you for the answer about memories.

I saw 850mW in full HD encode/decode in the document sprt514.pdf

Thank you for pointing that out, this is an older document that was put out early in the DM365 release at which point power had not been fully characterized, it is still in the ball park but is actually just a bit higher than what we typically see today, for example a 720p 30fps encode in the power consumption summary shows around 759mW. In general I would recommend taking a look at the DM36x power consumption summary application note to get a more accurate feel for what sort of power consumption you are looking at.
