DM365 : MPEG-4 codec format

Hi. All~~

Could you tell me the meaning of "closed" in the following description on codec support of DM365 ?

The bitstream encoded with XVid [ D1, SP Level1] which is decoded with DM6446 well, produces "fatal decoding error" on DM365.

I think it is because DM365 only can decode "closed" format of MPEG4, isn't it?

* Initial H.264 and MPEG4 decode codecs will be 'closed' (limited codec format support), universal decode for H.264 and MPEG4 should be available around July 2009

    This means that the 'closed' codec can only play back files with a limited subset of codec options as opposed to the full codec spec, the limitations are defined in the codec datasheet. Practically this means that you cannot play an arbitrary MPEG4 file with the closed codec, only certain MPEG4 files will play, for example any file that was encoded with the corresponding MPEG4 encoder, which is why you can record and play back video with the DM365.

    One more question..

    According to "Codec Availability Schedule", Full MPEG4 codec is available around July 2009.

    Before that, is it possible for me to get datasheet describing the difference in detail between full and closed, in order to modify/enable/disable

    feature of outside encoder ?

    I apologize I mentioned the wrong document, you are actually looking for the User's Guide as opposed to the Datasheet, in particular dvsdk_2_10_00_13\dm365_codecs_01_00_03\packages\ti\sdo\codecs\mpeg4dec\Docs\MPEG4_Decoder_DM365_UserGuide.pdf section 1.4, below is an excerpt of the section.

    - The current version of MPEG4 SP decoder is a restricted decoder. It can decode only streams encoded with the DM365 MPEG4 Encoder.
    -- Does not support video packet resynchronization 
    -- Does not support Data partitioning (DP)
    -- Does not support Reversible VLCs (RVLCs)
    -- Does not support Header Extension Code (HEC) 

    - Does not support 4MV 

    - Does not support MV range beyond -32 and +31 

    - Does not support arbitrary width and height 
    -- Supports image width as multiple of 16 and height as multiple of 16. 
    -- Does not support image width below 160 

    - Does not support decoding of 720x1280 (rotated 720P) and 960x1280 (rotated SXVGA) formats

    Where can I get or buy a FULL mpeg4 codec for the DM365 urgently. I need to go live with a new project soon, and need a "universal" codec.
