RTOS/AM5706: Learning curve

Part Number: AM5706
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM5728, , BEAGLEBOARD-X15

Tool/software: TI-RTOS

I am down-selecting a processor solution and the Sitara is a strong candidate.  However, based upon my OMAP experience I am concerned regarding the learning curve in getting TI-RTOS working on BOTH the ARM and DSP cores.  I was thinking of using a low-cost Beagleboard-X15 quad core (AM5728) for a feasibility study although our product would likely use a lower-level dual core AM5706.  It seems like the training is self-help and I am concerned that I could encounter cost and schedule delays if I encounter problems.  Note that due to program requirements I cannot use Linux as the OS.  Hopefully I am not in the minority an lack support by going away from mainstream Linux.  Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Dave

  • Dave,

Processor SDK RTOS is officially supported on AM57x platform. We have many customers using it. Especially in industrial applications where real time performance is required. You won't be in the minority. You can start from the latest Processor SDK RTOS 5.3 version just released. 1st example I would recommend is the template apps.

Yes, there is a lot of training materials available. You will for sure have some learning curve if you didn't have prior knowledge but it will most likely be one time only. The SDK tries to maintain feature parity with APIs. So once you learn how to use the APIs and become familiar with API and drivers, the next time it will be much easier. It is especially important if you have multiple projects which requires scalability from AM335x to AM65x in terms of functions & cost. They will all be using Processor SDK. So your one time learning will really pay off in the longer run.

Please continue to use E2E for support.
