TMS320C6418: Can we develop Ethernet port?

Hi,

Can we use LAN9303 or LAN91C111 with TMS320C6418 over its paralel port in order to realize an Ethernet interface, TCP/IP Stack? In short can we construct an Ethernet interface with TMS320C6418?

As known it does not have any EMAC but there are Ethernet switches working over paralel port. There is also TMS320C6424 with EMAC but we have many TMS320C6418 parts in our stock.

Hi Serkan,

Which port are you planning to use exactly?

In general this device is not targeting such implementation, so you will have to write the whole stack yourself, you can't relay on TI RTOS examples.

Hi Yordan,

at SPRU523 there says we can use TMC320C6416 DSK with LAN91C111 over EMIF interface, so we are planning to use EMIF port.

Can you please check NDK1.94.01 from http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_registered_sw/sdo_sb/targetcontent/NDK/index.html. We are planning to use that stack.

Hi,

i was not able to locate where exactly the Network Developer's Guide (SPRU523: www.ti.com/.../spru523k.pdf) mentions the use of TMS320C6416 DSK with LAN91C111, but the NDK1.94.01 release notes say that it is compatible with C64xx devices (which include TMS320C6418), so you should be able to use the NDK with your device.

However, as I said the EMIF driver to control the LAN91C111 over the parallel port might need modifications on CSL level.

Hi,
At 2.1.1 at page 12 of SPRU523 says TCP/IP Stack includes support for 6416 DSK and it also gives Ethernet PHY suggestions that includes LAN91C111.

Ok thank you, i think it should work but i wanted to be sure.

Hi again,
i am a bit confused, if you look datasheet of LAN91C111, at section 12.1 it says you can connect to target via;
1. VL Local Bus 32 bit systems
2. High-end ISA or non-burst EISA machines
3. EISA 32 bit slave
methods.

I can not understand which method should we use to connect LAN91C111 and TMS320C6418? Signals and data width differs according to the method. SPRU523 does not mention about this issue. Can you please guide me?

Hi,

The important point here is to see which of these corresponds to EMIF timings & specs described in TMS320C6418 Datasheet. See Section4.12 EMIF Device Speed & Section 7.2 Asynchronous Memory Timing through Section 7.4 Synchronous DRAM Timing.

Hi Serkan,

I expect the hardware will allow the use of EMIF to interface to an Ethernet chip. Check that the parallel port timings required for the Ethernet speeds desired are feasible with the EMIF16 peripheral.

We did exactly this on the VC5502 eZdsp - interfacing to a similar Microchip 10/100 Base-T/TX Ethernet Controller: KSZ8851

For that board, a 3rd party DSignT developed the software since no TI software exists. You might reach out to them if the effort is too much.
