Hello,

Is there standard Ethernet interface on the AM3359 Sitara ? There are two Ethernet RJ-45 connectors on the demo board TMDSICE3359. I have run the EtherCAT led blinking application on the this demo board. I wonder that can these two RJ-45 ports be used as standard Ethernet ? Or standard Ethernet pins on the AM3359 processor are different from the Industrial Ethernet pins ? There are seen 2-Port 10/100 PRU EMAC and 2-Port 1Gb Switch on the AM3359 datasheet. Can I connect the standard Ethernet (I mean TCP/IP or UDP/IP) to this one of this ports?

Hi,

Yes, there are 2-Port 10/100 PRU EMAC and 2-Port 1Gb Switch on the AM3359 device. However the pins used are overlapping and all ports cannot be used at the same time. Please see processors.wiki.ti.com/.../AM335x_Industrial_Communication_Engine_EVM_Rev2_1_HW_User_Guide

Here's a picture of the jumpers that switch between the PRU/ICSS and the CPSW 2-port switch:

Both Linux and TI-RTOS can support TCP/UDP over either PRU/ICSS or Linux. For Linux, it works out of the box as a standard Ethernet interface. And you could choose to use only one of these ports if you'd like.

Thank you for this quick response.

When I make Sitara as EtherCAT Master with one of Real time Linux or TI-RTOS, I will only use one RJ-45 connector on the demo board. The other RJ-45 is unused. Can I use this unused port as standard Ethernet (TCP/IP or UDP/IP) ? It would be great.

If I make Sitara as EtherCAT slave, I will use both RJ-45 connectors because of topology.

Hi,

I think a major part of the answer that you are looking for will be concerning what are you using for an EtherCAT master stack. To my knowledge EtherCAT master stacks usually run using a raw socket mode on an Ethernet port that supports IP traffic. Also please note that how the RJ-45 connectors are configured might matter for the software that you are running on the platform.

If you are using Linux and set the RJ-45 connectors to use the CPSW. I have seen the topology you are asking about in Linux on other TI Sitara platforms when the CPSW ports are used, IP traffic on one port and EtherCAT Master on the other port. A 3rd party must provide the EtherCAT master stack in this case.

If you are using Linux and set the RJ-45 connectors to use the PRU then a non-industrial PRU firmware will be loaded (support IP traffic) and this should work like the CPSW case. Again a 3rd party must provide the EtherCAT master stack.
