External oscillator connections for DM365 MX1

I would like to use an external oscillator with the DM365.  There are very specific notes on how to connect an external crystal, but very little infromation on what to do with VSS_MX1 in the event that you use an external oscillator in place of a crystal.  My interpretation thus far is that I connect the clock signal to MXI and leave both MXO and VSS_MX1open. Can someone please help clarify how I should make my external oscillator connections?  Do I need to do something special with VSS_MX1 (like connect it to GND?) for this configuration?

Thanks,

Greg

  • The clock signal from the external oscillator certainly goes into the MXI pin so that sounds about right, however I am still trying to get some verification internally on the VSS_MX1 pin. My suspicion is that it would have to be grounded as I believe it is the ground for the oscillator circuitry, so it may be necessary to allow the clock to propogate through to the PLL, but this is something we are looking into.

  • We have obtained confirmation on this from our design architect and will add this info for future datasheet releases. The connection for an external oscillator would look as follows:

    MXI1  --> External Oscillator clk signal

    MXO1 --> Leave unconnected.

    VSS_MXI-> VSS ground

  • Hi Aaron,

    Thanks for the information.

    One more question about the external oscillator...   can you please confirm that the oscillator input is restricted to same range as all other 1.8V I/O ( -0.5 V to 2.6 V )?

    thanks,

    Greg
