AM6548: IDK as PCIe endpoint

Part Number: AM6548

Hi,

A customer of mine would like to use the AM6548 IDK as PCIe endpoint. Will this work with a simple adapter cable connected to a host PC? Or are there any changes on the board required?

2nd question: when operating as endpoint, will we offer drivers for the host side (x86 PC using Windows or Linux)?

Thanks,
  Robert

  • Hi Robert,

By default the AM6548 IDK includes a PCIE connector defined as host which means that it provides power and drives the reference clock.  We test the interface as endpoint by using a special cross-over cable that disconnects the power pins and the clock pins. That cable is from Adex Electronics and has the part number PE-FLEX4-G2-MMCX-12-TI1.

Note that the PCIE specification states that the endpoint can operate without using the reference clock provided on the PCIE connector, however, this will only work if the host is using a clock that is not spread spectrum. If the host is using spread spectrum, the PCIE endpoint must be configured to accept the reference clock from the PCIE connector. This would require a physical modification to the IDK, a different cross over connector and a modification to the configuration of the AM65x to accept the outside reference clock.
