AM3354: Ethernet ports not getting IP from DHCP

Part Number: AM3354
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TRF7970A, AM3352, TPS65910

Dear TI Team,

On our custom board, we re checking our ethernet port configurations to find out what is causing a fail while getting an IP from a DHCP automatically. Currently we re giving an IP manuelly but this time we cannot ping any device in the same network. Below you can find the boot up logs. Can you pls. help to check them?

  • Hello,

Have you used Wireshark to check the wire to see if the packets actually being sent out are valid? From what I can tell here, the MAC thinks everything is OK and it is sending packets. So, this may be a PHY issue. Checking the wire will help determine this.

    I hope this is helpful.

  • Hello,

Are you still experiencing this issue of no IP address? Were you able to use Wireshark to see if any ARP packets were being sent in an attempt to acquire an IP address?

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi,

We checked the issue with using 2x mainboard, 1x computer(of which ip add. is 192.168.0.100), and  1x ethernet router(D-Link). Here one of the mainboard has gotten IP, 192.168.0.101, immediately but the other side not. It got the IP randomly. Actually while trying to understand what is causing this issue, we tried to add some capacitors on the power line of ethernet phy. If we add small valued caps such as 100 nF, the board got the IP without problem but there is no stability since one board can get IP with 2x extra 100nF, the other one can get the IP 3x extra 100nF. So that we re checking phy side power line. Up to now could find anything beacuse there is no issue observed in our older version board. And we could not make any change related with ethernet side on our last version board. If you would like to check, I am adding wireshark logs below.

  • Hi,

Could you please attach a diagram of how the connection or connections between the AM335x, the DLINK router and the computer? Are both ports of the AM335x connected to the router?

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi Schuyler,

You can find the connection diagrams in below. We are using RMII interface and there is only one ethernet port per board. While trying to understand the issue, we establish a network with 2x mainboard and 1xcomputer.

As i mentioned before, one of the board has gotten IP from Dlink router after we decrease the ethernet phy. supply voltage from 3.31V levels to 3.26V levels. On the other board, we kept the supply voltage at 3.31V levels and it did not get the IP. That is so interesting because, in our Rev.2 boards our ethernet phy supply voltage is around 3.31V levels and we are not seeing this issue. But in Rev.3 boards although we did not change anything related with ethernet side, we are facing such a problem like that.

  • Hi,

Thank you for posting the diagram, this is not what I had originally thought for the network topology.

I will ask a team member to comment about the capacitors being added to the power line.

But could you attach the results of "ifconfig -a" from each board? If only one board is connected does it get an IP address every time? Is the computer in the diagram a Linux computer?

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi,

The computer we used is Windows OS based, and you can find the "ifconfig -a" outputs of both am335x boards in below. Here as the issue has random characteristic, the second board also did not get the ip address while trying to take a screenshot. Besides, we have observed that if we put a cooler on board, device gets IP and can ping the computer without any error. When we check the temperature on the board, we have seen the highest temp. is around 40 C and normally there musnt be any problem at that temperature levels.

BTW, we had set the PHY address as 0x01(via boot-strap pins of ethernet phy IC, KSZ8041rnl) but as you can see from the boot-up logs that i shared in this thread before(in the beginning of this thread), mdio is at 00(Micrel KSZ8041RNLI 4a101000.mdio:00: attached PHY driver [Micrel KSZ8041RNLI] (mii_bus:phy_addr=4a101000.mdio:00, irq=POLL)). And also there are two mdio that has been probed every time(

    [ 1.372721] libphy: 4a101000.mdio: probed
    [ 1.376928] davinci_mdio 4a101000.mdio: phy[0]: device 4a101000.mdio:00, driver Micrel KSZ8041RNLI
    [ 1.385937] davinci_mdio 4a101000.mdio: phy[1]: device 4a101000.mdio:01, driver Micrel KSZ8041RNLI )

Is there any mistake that we have done related with this?

  • Hi,

Lets concentrate on one board at a time, the last post showed both boards not getting an ip address. Could you please attach a wireshark capture from the power of the board? Also could you please attach the DTS file for the board? Also please attach the boot log for the board under test and please capture the boot log until the wireshark capture is completed. An example is I only need to see up to about 30 seconds after booting. Thank you.

  • Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. So far we tried a couple of things(generally focused on HW side) to understand the issue. For example

1- If the board temperature increases then the device begins not to get IP. Here we measured temperatures on SoC, RAM, PMIC, eMMC and Ethernet PHY but none of them do not exceed the 50 C degrees. But it seems that the RMII lines(goes on Layer1) are susceptible to heat increase on the board.

2- We try to put our finger on RMII lines on the board. Here we have seen that device, that has an IP, stopped pinging to Computer when we put our finger on RMII lines(RX,TX and CLK)

3- After these two steps, we decided to change termination resistors on RMII lines from 22R to 0R. This is worked for some boards(currently we did not see any issue like that even if the board temperature is around 50 C degrees)) but there are some boards having still this issue.

Actually we are assuming that 50 C degree temperature is normal for the board and this must not affect the Ethernet signals as well. I think here heat is creating a capacitive effect on the lines(like as putting a finger on the lines). But we could not prove that.

Besides all that we changed(Micrel KSZ8041RNLI 4a101000.mdio:01: attached PHY driver [Micrel KSZ8041RNLI] (mii_bus:phy_addr=4a101000.mdio:01, irq=POLL)), mdio phy address from 00 to 01 since we have chosen mii bus phy adrdress  as "01" via pin strap pins on the board. But this is also not worked for the boards which are not getting IP when the board heats up.

  • Hello,

Temperature can affect interface timing. RMII is a notoriously tight interface from a timing perspective...what were the results of your pre-fab interface timing analysis?

  • Hi,

Since we have not heard back we are assuming that you were able to move past the issue. I will close the thread for now.
