TMS320LC206: DSP Emulator pod

Part Number: TMS320LC206

Hello,

We have a custom board based on TMS320LC206PZ80. The SBL (Secondary bootloader) is located in Flash memory. Our manufacturing department says that the bootloader is flashed with the DSP Emulator pod working under Windows 95.

Here is the response from them: The usual way to recover a ‘bricked’ board requires the TI DSP emulator to get code running on the DSP. The boot code can then be loaded via the serial link. However the only emulator that I know of is in the Test department here. (It is also very old and running on a Windows 95 machine). If you have access to a TI DSP emulator pod then I can probably find a procedure to re-flash the boot code.

Below attached the pictures of the equipment used in this process. I can read that it is XDS510

Question: Is it possible to find the modern solution to the same thing?  I see that there is XDS510USB  and most probably it will run on Win7/10.  Will the latest debugger (XDS560USB) work with  our DSP (which is kind of legacy one)? What is the recommended way to deal with our DSP?

Any help will be appreciated.

  • Hi,

I am not sure TI supports this any more. I haven't seen this device (TMS320LC206 in the CCS packages)... Let me check that internally.

    Best Regards,

With this family of devices, the concept of "modern" will be something that will range from Windows 98 to XP. As Yordan mentioned, the F20x family of devices is not supported in a very long time and the only tool available that will have limited support (perhaps flash programming is impaired) is the Code Composer v4.1 SP2 (not Code Composer Studio) with a XDS510PP+ Debug Probe (LPT or Parallel Port for Printers).

Also, if I recall correctly, the XDS510PP+ does not work on ECP Parallel ports, thus the host must support EPP or SPP.

If you search on the internet for "TMS320F206 Flash", you can find additional information about its internal Flash operation - we don't publish these documents anymore.

Unfortunately that is the extend of support that I can provide.

    Hope this helps,

    Rafael

  • Thank you very much Rafael and Yordan!

It is a good starting point for me!

  • Hi Rafael,

Can we use USB version of the XDS510?

    http://www.spectrumdigital.com/xds510-usb-plus-jtag-emulator-with-20-pin-cti-cable-and-20-pin-to-14-pin-adapter/

Why we are limited with LPT variant?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi,

I don't think the USB variants support the F206 device - it may be a combination between the Code Composer (not studio) and the USB support.

The XDS510USB was released many years after the F206.

You can try to talk to Spectrum Digital, as they are the ones that support those old debug probes.

    Regards,
