DM355 based IPNC kernel build

Hello everybody,

I have a question related to DM355 based IPNC camera. In fact I received the software from Appro, and I would like to compile the kernel.

At present time I don't have the Montavista toolchain, is there some alternative way to build the kernel using for example the eldk toolchain (or another free build tool)?

If not, in order to "try" the software on this camera is it possible to use the Montavista toolchain provided with the DM355 EVM, or I have to buy immediatly the full version?

Any help will be appreciated.

Gio

  • You should be able to use the one provided with DM355 EVM.

  • First, thanks for your help.

So there is no way to build the project with free tools?

Is there someone that can assure me that buying the EVM I will be able to work with the IPNC camera? In fact I'm not interested in the "simple" EVM, but only in the IPNC camera, therefore I would like to avoid un necessary expensive tools :-)

    Thanks again for your help

    Gio

I am certain this is possible, though I have not tried using everything directly from the open source community, there would likely be some effort in getting this to work.

Technically the only way of getting the EVM's DVSDK software package is to purchase an EVM (as the updates site requires a board to be registered), at least this is how things stand today. I am not sure if there is a better way of getting the software or not, your best bet would be to query Appro as to how other customers have gotten their hands on the DVSDK software, they can probably also confirm if the DVSDK software you would have gotten with the EVM is what they intend to be used with the board.

  • First, thanks a lot for your help.

I asked also to a TI application field an confirmed me that for development purposes it suffices to buy the EVM.

However in order to sell a customized software it is necessary to buy the tmdsdvspba9 software.

    Thanks again

This is not necessarily the case, by my understanding you can go to production with the DVSDK software you receive with the EVM as it is using open source (GPL) Linux software. You only have to buy the DVSPB if you want access to the Monta Vista Dev Rocket IDE and the Monta Vista Zone site, the Zone site gives you access to the regular Monta Vista software updates that you do not get with the DVSDK, things like kernel level security patches and optimizations, however you can still get access to the TI side software updates through the www.ti.com/davinciregistration site if you have registered a board.

Note however that I am not a lawyer, you need to have your legal department determine what you truly can and cannot do with the software based on the licenses, the above is just my understanding of the licensing agreement.
