TMS320C6748: Choosing ADC and DAC for TMS320C6748

Part Number: TMS320C6748
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAPL138, DAC34SH84, ADS5560

Hello everyone,

I am trying to choose DSP for ultrasound processing. I want to generate and transmit 200 kHz ultrasound signal with transmitting transducer and receive it with receiving one. So far, I have been considering TMS320C6748 DSP Development Kit (LCDK), but considering that it doesn't have integrated DAC and ADC converters I am having trouble deciding which ones to use in order to make them compatible with TMS320C6748 DSP.

Does anybody have suggestions on which ADC and DAC convertors should I pay attention to? Or if another DSP is maybe more suitable?

I am not very experienced in the field of DSPs, therefore I would appreciate any kind of advice or suggestion.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Dejana

I do not think there are any specific ADC/DACs show-cased with OMAPL138 EVMs or TI Designs. If you found some DAC/ADCs that meet your requirement, we can investigate whether or not they will work with OMAPL138.

Additionally you may want to contact our 3P - Critical Link. They sell hardware / SOM kits with lot of connectivity and options to interface with OMAPL138 that you may not find on the LCDK.

e.g. the following posts talks about specific ADC and DACs

I believe the analog expansion IO card is no longer regularly available, but you can reach out to them to see if this is something they can support you with - might also help reduce your design time.

  • Hi Mukul,

Thank you a lot for your response.

I have considered DAC34SH84 and ADS5560 convertors so far. Do you think that they could be used with TMS320C6748?

Additionally, do you think that for my application some other DSP could be maybe more suitable? I have seen that TMS320C6748 evaluation kit doesn't incorporate emulator. As I would like to as much things incorporated as possible within reasonable price, I am having second thoughts about the previously mentioned DSP.

    Thank you once again.

    Kind regards,

    Dejana

  • Hi Dejana

Sorry for the delay in response. I will need to check with the medical systems team if they have any specific recommendations for this from a total system solution perspective.

Usually I have seen higher end DSPs like c6678 or the AM57x family used for ultra sound applications. Apart from the ADC/DAC attach do you have additonal requirements

    1)Price & power target

    2) OS choice

    3) Other peripherals, connectivity , storage etc ?

Are you familiar with the following application pages

  • Hi Mukul,

It is alright, thank you for helping me.

As far as the additional requirements are concerned I don't have special needs. I would like to use as much integrated board as it is possible for a reasonable price (up to maybe 300 $ for the DSP).

However, the price issue is not fixed.

I have come accross the application pages that you suggested.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Dejana

    Sorry for the delayed response.

I still think C674x should be a good DSP for  you to leverage.

Given at some point in the past Critical Link had a board to support this

    https://support.criticallink.com/redmine/projects/90-000173/wiki

I recommend that you do contact them - I have given them a heads up.

They may have hardware/design and software that may help you jumpstart this development.

    Regards
