CCS/TMS320C5517: What debugging connection is used for the EVM5517?

I will point out that the page for the EVM5517 only says "Designers can readily target the TMS320C5517 DSPs through TI's robust and comprehensive Code Composer Studio IDE" - no mention of version or OS requirements.

The EVM5517 User's Guide says: "or running CCSv6 example projects connect to your Target in CCS (via a suitable emulator such as the “XDS510”, “XDS100” or the EVM’s "Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp onboard USB Emulator"). To use the Onboard emulator, connect a USB A/B cable from your host PC’s USB port to port 'EMU USB' (J3) on the EVM". But there is no "DSK-EVM" option in the connections box from Code Composer. Admittedly I'm not using CCS6 because I cannot find an operating system old enough for it to work on.

How is someone meant to actually do any work on the C55x series?

The "software" section of that page just links to a generic CCS page. It does not say which version is required.

As far as I can tell, the EVM5517 requires CCS 8.3.1, and is only compatible with Windows (not Linux or Mac). Is that correct?

It seems quite restrictive to have deprecated the C5515, which could be developed for from multiple operating systems, in favour of the C5517 which is far, far harder to configure development for. Are TI simply not planning to provide a platform for DSP development any more, because there don't seem to be any other comparable low power DSP devices from TI (the next best combination of power/performance come from other vendors eg. AD)?

For EVM5517,  the “Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp onboard USB Emulator” is not part of CCS 9.x but it is part of the CCS 8.x and before though. So CCS 8.3.1 should work.  When you install CCS, if you install the Spectrum Digital CCS Support Package, you should be able to find it when you add a new target configuration. I believe both Windows & Linux should work but Windows is recommended.

The Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp certainly doesn't appear in the "Connection:" list in CCS 8.3.1 under Linux. How can I install it? Where is the "Spectrum Digital CCS Support Package"?

It looks like this is not supported under Linux after all. Very disappointing, and a huge waste of time for this engineer. You need to make basic compatibility information more prominent, and you need to figure out whether you want to be supporting low power DSP designs or not.

To further add:

On Windows:

CCS v8.3.1 supports XDS510. When you install CCS, make sure spectrum digital is selected when prompted for emulation options. If you didn't select that one earlier, you can run the installation binary again and then check that option.

CCSv9 does not support XDS510 though.

On Linux:

XDS510USB dropped support only on CCSv6.2.0 but earlier 6.x should be Okay.
