AM5728: PTP hardware connections

Part Number: AM5728

I am doing a custom AM5728 board that will implement PTP via Ethernet (on EMAC0; EMAC1 is not connected).

I have been reviewing this wiki page: http://software-dl.ti.com/processor-sdk-linux/esd/docs/latest/linux/Industrial_Protocols_PTP.html#hardware

And this PDF document: https://processors.wiki.ti.com/images/2/2f/Am572x_am574x_idk_pps_ModList.pdf

However, these instructions are unclear, since they are written as rework instructions.

For a custom design, can TI please clarify the hardware peripheral connections required to make PTP work properly, as well as output a 1PPS signal?

  • To further clarify, my system will only ever be a PTP slave and just needs to output 1PPS if it has PTP master present in the eth0 (EMAC0) network. There is only the one ethernet port on the board.

Does that mean that all that is required from hardware perspective is to have timer16 output pin broken out?

Does that also mean that PRU-ICSS use is not required for PTP?

  • Hi,

From the description you have made, essential the product is an endpoint, the PRU-ICSS is not required for CPSW PTP. The timer 16 break out approach is OK for getting a PPS output signal. The reason for the rework instructions was the requirement for the PPS came well after the board was in production.

    Best Regards,
