GigE on OMAPL138 using additional chips

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAPL138, OMAP-L138

Hi:

Is there a  hook up external chip  to OMAPL138 to provide GigE functionality. Has anyone tried using PRU or DDR2 for this purpose - any  potential issues ?.

Thanks,

Pradhyum

  • I haven't seen this done, and I have doubts that it would be practical to try to get Gigabit Ethernet on a OMAP-L138, I suspect your performance would be relatively low (for Gigabit Ethernet) even if you could get a physical interface going since the TCP/IP stack takes a lot of MIPS for a <500MHz ARM9. In theory you could add this in over USB using a USB 2.0 Gigabit Ethernet adapter (they do exist), however I would not have high hopes of getting performance much over the 10/100 Ethernet that is on board.

As to the PRU or the DDR2, my impression is that the PRU would be too slow, and that the DDR2 would be too finicky (as it is really only designed to talk to real DDR2 chips, this would be tough to do outside of an expensive FPGA solution).
