66AK2G12: Selection request

Part Number: 66AK2G12
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM5706,

Dear experts,

My customer is working on a project to develop an electronic keyboard. Now they find AM5706 and 66AK2G12 can meet their demands, need our experts to share your comments about difference between these 2 devices and suggestions.

Thanks.

  • Thank you for reaching out to us to get clarification and help  with your customer`s design. We can definitely help with the device selection. While both the devices on the face of it appear to be ARM +DSP based SOC, there are many differences that offer unique value to different use cases and end applications. I am highlighting a few of the feature and similarities that may help understand the value

    1. 66AK2G12 adds higher DSP performance with a larger internal L2 memory that increases the DSP performance. DSP and ARM run at the same speeds on the device while on AM570x the ARM speed is 1 GHz and C66x speed can be increased upto 750 MHz. AM570x allows users to scale to AM571x for higher performance. K2G supports a 600 Mhz variant and scales to 1 Ghz on the higher end. AM570x also supports a general purpose IPU subsystem whichis based on Cortex M4.

    2. K2G supports DDR3 speeds up 1066  MTs and AM571x can support max speed 1333 MTs. K2G DDR does support ECC for additonal reliability which is not available on AM571x. Generally, K2G has EDC/ECC coverage across all its internal memory and external memory interfaces.

3.. AM570x is suited for applications that required graphics and display as it has enhanced capability with GPU/SGX support with display subsystem that can support 2 LCD display/1 HDMI. K2G display subsystem can only support 1 LCD display. AM570x also has video input ports VIP for camera input that are not available on K2G which may not be a care-about for an electronic keyboard application.

    5. Both the devices support capability for supporting multi-zone audio with multiple MCASP/I2S instances. From evaluation perspective, the TI support evaluation platform for K2G is designed to support larger number of audio use cases and support a multi channel audio daughter card that is not supported on AM570x platforms which is primarily designed for Industrial communications use cases. K2G additionally also supports a HW ASRC for advanced audio usecase that require clock synchronization.

    6. From a system design perspective, K2G does support discrete power solutions as well as a PMIC based power solutions. AM57x has multiple voltage domains and requires an external PMIC In the design. Comparatively, K2G has a more simplified pin multiplexing and supports 16 bit DDR design which can reduce design complexity.

Both devices support the same industrial subsystem(ICSSM) and similar set of serial (SPI, UART, I2C, DCAN) and flash memory interfaces (QSPI, GPMC). They are also designed to provide standard secure boot and do support slightly different set of crypto accelerators.

Please let us know your feedback if this suffices in providing sufficient clarification or if there are other questions that we can help clarify.

    Regards,

    Rahul
