For a streaming video application under H.264 compression, and OMAP3530 GPIO pins being routed to an FPGA for processing, what kind of pin count would be necessary? i.e. would a higher bandwidth data stream require more gpio pins to the FPGA? Also, for high speed data (like SDIO) are more pins necessary to accommodate the higher data rate? My end application will feature a Gumstix with OMAP3530 and a Spartan3 FPGA.

What kind of data rate do you need between the 2 devices?

You might also look at using the GPMC rvideo in/out ports if you need higher data rates or a more autonomous transaction than you could achieve with GPIO.

Somewhere between 500-800kbps would be the necessary data rate. Does this fall in to the GPMC category or could it still be done with GPIO?

It could probably still be done with GPIO, but one of the other interfaces would allow you to better automate the transfers with DMA etc...

If you want full control but don't care as much about exact timings, then GPIO is simpler but will have more processing overhead and be more susceptible to other things going on in the system affecting the exact timings of events.
