HI

I followed the "CAN Response and Bootloader Demo Application" instructions,

but the main UART Port#1 output message is unsuccessful,

Software : PSDK 6.2.0

Storage device : MMCSD card

  • Hi,

Please provide answers to the following -

    1. The issue seems like the linux is crashing and rest everything is booted. Can you ensure that you are following the steps at mcusw_docs/internal_docs/docs_doxy_cfg/drv_docs/demo_boot_app_mcu_rtos_top.html#demo_boot_app_mcu_rtos_building_main_domain_applications_hlos?
      1. Where are you taking your boot parameters/environment from? Can you please share them?
      2. It is possibly some issue with the kernel not able to load the filesystem.
    2. There is no modification to the code whatsoever?
    3. Also, did you build and run as per the instructions at - mcusw_docs/internal_docs/docs_doxy_cfg/drv_docs/demo_boot_app_mcu_rtos_top.html

    Regards,

    Karan

It is possibly some issue with the kernel not able to load the filesystem.

I used u-boot to boot successfully.

There is no modification to the code whatsoever?

    No modification.

Also, did you build and run as per the instructions at - mcusw_docs/internal_docs/docs_doxy_cfg/drv_docs/demo_boot_app_mcu_rtos_top.html

  • Hi,

Can you tell me where is your filesystem? Is it SD card?

    Regards,

    Karan

  • Hi,

If we look at the MAIN UART PORT#1 logs we see the following -

[ 5.999155] VFS: Cannot open root device "(null)" or unknown-block(0,0): error -6
[ 6.008530] Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:

Your Kernel command line: console=ttyS2,115200n8 earlycon=ns16550a,mmio32,0x02800000

So as the "root" parameter is not set in this, the kernel is unable to find the filesystem.

Can you please tell me where are you passing these bootargs from? Is it while making the linux image? The solution to the problem is to append the following to the kernel command line -

    root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rw rootfstype=ext4 rootwait

so your kernel command line should look like -

    console=ttyS2,115200n8 earlycon=ns16550a,mmio32,0x02800000 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rw rootfstype=ext4 rootwait

Please let me know if this works for you.

    Regards,

    Karan

  • HI :

    I modify the kernel command line : console=ttyS2,115200n8 earlycon=ns16550a,mmio32,0x02800000 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rw rootfstype=ext4 rootwait

    But new problems arise.

  • Hi,

I will get in touch with the demo owner and get back to you on this.

Meanwhile can you please confirm that all filesystem files are set up as ‘root’ on the target filesystem? i.e. you have copied all files/folders to the ‘rootfs’ partition with ‘sudo’ access?

  • Hi,

Can you please modify the kernel command line again to -

    console=ttyS2,115200n8 earlycon=ns16550a,mmio32,0x02800000 root=/dev/mmcblk1p2 rw rootfstype=ext4 rootwait

The root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 which was there initially is probably trying to look for the File system in the EMMC.

Can you please rebuild the DTB again with this “/dev/mmcblk1p2” in the bootargs, instead of “/dev/mmcblk0p2” change?

    This should resolve the issue.

    Regards,

    Karan

  • How to cancel the "Resolved" status of the forum?
  • Hi,

Since you posted a reply after that, this thread is still open.

  • HI

Do you have any updates about the issue?

  • Hi,

We tried the attached patch on top of the kernel in the PSDKLA 6.02 release (and rebuilt the DTBs).  Using the updated DTB from this build gave good results  (using rootfs from the PSDKLA release on SD card ‘rootfs’ partition).

Can you please check how you are setting up the card? And/or please try another 16GB card?

  • HI.

    I don't have a 16GB Card.

I need to buy a new 16GB card.

Please tell me the specifications I should buy.  (SandDisk? ADATA? Kingston? TOSHIBA? Transcend? Sony? Energizer?)

    Why can't I use the "TOSHIBA Micro SD 32GB : THN-M401S0320A2" ?

  • Hi,

Did you not get a 16GB Sandisk Edge (class 10) micro SD card along with the EVM? We check at our end on that one.

Your card should have worked, but we haven't tried it so could be possible that there might be some issue which, once we procure that card, can be debugged.

    Regards,

    Karan

  • HI :

I found 16GB Sandisk Edge (class 10) micro SD card.

The result of the test is that there is no way to solve the problem.

  • Hi,

I've got the EVM with me now, and I'm trying to reproduce the issue so we can debug here locally.

Are you building the demo or using some pre-built images?

Also, can you please share the detailed steps which you followed, so that I can try that?

    Regards,

    Karan

  • Hi,

I'm able to reproduce the issue locally, will get back with more details.

  • Hi,

Seems like we have an issue with moving to latest SD boot method with booting Linux directly from SD card.

    • U-boot is modifying the Device Tree in an unexpected way for SD boot. So, since we don't have U-boot in our "fast boot" flow, we are likely missing something that U-boot is doing for the SD boot.

Recommendation now would be to use the OSPI boot method where we flash the application in the OSPI and the linux file system is in the SD card.

Please refer to http://downloads.ti.com/jacinto7/esd/processor-sdk-rtos-jacinto7/latest/exports/docs/mcusw/mcal_drv/docs/drv_docs/demo_boot_app_mcu_rtos_top.html#demo_boot_app_mcu_rtos_steps_2_run section "Writing needed binaries to OSPI" on what to flash.

Please let me know if this configuration where we use OSPI instead of MMCSD (to showcase early features) works for you. You would need the uniflash tool (http://www.ti.com/tool/UNIFLASH) to flash to OSPI.

Also, if you need help in flashing to OSPI and running the application from OSPI - please create a new E2E thread and I will keep this thread till for the MMCSD update when it gets fixed.

    Regards,
    Karan
