OMAP3530CBC and Lack of POP Memory Availability

I just discovered that Micron has discontinued manufacture of the 152 Ball  devices to support this version of the processor.  Prior to selecting this part for a design project for my client, I checked with TI and also Micron regarding longevity of manufacture and support for this device, and was assured by both that this product was to be supported by them for the long haul.  I do still see that TU is actively promoting the part so how do you plan for customers to use it without the essential  POP memory?

Now what is my client supposed to do, just when we are going into production?  Does TI have any solutions to this dilemna?  The part we have been using up to the present time is the MT29C2G24MAKLACG-6 IT.  We can also use the larger device MT29C4G48MAPLCJQ-6 IT.

Thank you

  • Hello Howard,

Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of the memory manufactueres and we are actively trying to persuade them to contineu 152b PoP devices, but with Micron so far we have not been able to get them to budge.   Hynix also makes a 152b PoP memory as well as Samsung.  Here is a wiki page with info on our memory requirements as well as info on manufacturers:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Memory_Vendor_Selection_Guide

If you scroll down to the "Memory Vendor" section I give a list of some of the different manufacturers and their distribution channels.  Also, if you click on the links in the PoP section there is a list of some of the different densities that they offer.

  • Hi Jeff,

I apologize for not thanking you for your response.  I linked to your wiki page and followed up with Hynix (since Micron has totally dropped us here!), and that has been a battle, I am still trying to get a price and availability out of them so we can purchase parts - it sounds like they are manufacturing the 4Gb NAND/2Gb DDR part, but getting a price and company to order them from is like pulling teeth.  As far as Samsung is concerned. I was not able to find any information showing that they make a 152 ball part, can you help in any way with a data sheet, part # etc?  Also, if you can point us in the direction of a distributor who has stock of 152 ball POP memory (for CBC package) it would really be appreciated.  Have you had any further luck with regard to memory manufacturers?  Alternatively, how about TI buying up and stocking the parts so that you can support your customers?  TI continues to launch parts relying on POP memory (e.g. DM37x), and the larger CBC package certainly will be preferred by anyone who is not into ultra miniature designs as the manufacturing challenges are reduced with the 0.5mm parts.

    Thank you and kind regards
