Double-arrow in 6437 schematic

Hi All,

Below is a screenshot from Sheet 24-PCI-Connector.SchDoc of EVM6437's schematic design and I would like to ask about a symbol on that.

In the screenshot, some pins have a symbols which has double arrows placed together in opposite directions, while for some not.

I initially thought that the double arrows means that the pin could functio both as an input and output, which is common for general-purpose I/O pins on DSP chips, but the G19 pin, which is

  1. Multiplexed between VPBECLK and GP[30], so as GP[30] it is could both serve as an input and an output.
  2. It is connected both to inputs (VID_CLK) and two outputs (CLK_OUT, VPBECLK).

So it is clearly has both input and output functionality, yet it is not drawn with the double-arrow symbol.

What does the double-arrow symbol represent then?

Thanks,
Zheng

  • There may be such inconsistencies in the schematics. So please only follow the data sheet and match up with the functionality desired from DM6437 for your application.

    Dear Varada,

Altium manual seems to indicate that the >> or << symbol are "Off Sheet Connectors":

Altium Designer Training Module 3: Schematic Editor Basics said:

Off Sheet Connectors are used to connect nets across multiple schematic sheets that are descended from sheet entries of the same parent sheet symbol.

The primary function of Offsheet connectors is for translation to and from Orcad Schematic Capture. If you intend to use Altium Designer to draw up a schematic, but the end schematic is required in Orcad format, then Offsheet connectors can be used.

I will study more on this and reply later.

    Dear Varada,

I asked some experienced PCB designers and they said such inconsistencies do exist, but does not matter much since EDA software rarely checks such pin type/direction settings and has no real impact on the design.

  • Hi Zheng,

Which photo editing software you have use to mark above  photos?
