PROCESSOR-SDK-AM65X: Enabling FTP Service in FileSystem

Part Number: PROCESSOR-SDK-AM65X

Hi ,

SDK: ti-processor-sdk-linux-am65xx-evm-06.00.00.07.

FTP  Service not enabled in Arago-tiny-image FileSystem. Can you let us know how to enable FTP service in the source ?

I also searched in busybox image also but this service is not available

regards

Venkatesh

  • Hi Venkatesh,

If you want any package from the full filesystem that want to be added into the tiny filesystem, then you can do the following:

    • Prepare SD card with the full filesystem (tisdk-rootfs-image) and boot your target.
    • Find the package that corresponds to the utility that you are looking for. Use the opkg search command for this purpose. Example:

    #opkg search /usr/bin/ftp

    netkit-ftp - 0.17-r0.96

    • Next step would be add this into the arago-tiny-image by editing the image.
    • Edit the file meta-arago-distro/recipes-core/images/arago-tiny-image.bb under sources/meta-arago
    • Add the package netkit-ftp into the appropriate section.
    • Rebuild the arago-tiny-image, you filesystem will now have the FTP service installed.

  • Hi Karthik,

Where to get Arago- file system source ?

I try to follow the  steps told in below link but not able to success in building the file system

     http://arago-project.org/wiki/index.php/Setting_Up_Build_Environment

We are not using Yocto build procedure ..

We need to create same file system which is created in TI SDK  ( ti-processor-sdk-linux-am65xx-evm-06.00.00.07).

Can you share the location where I can find the Source file Arago tiny  File system

Also please share the build procedure ..  setup for build environment.

    Regards

    Venkatesh

  • Hi Venkatesh,

Please follow the instructions mentioned in the Processor SDK Developers Guide, that you can refer from the download page:

    http://software-dl.ti.com/processor-sdk-linux/esd/AM65X/latest/index_FDS.html

The direct link to the build instructions is from here: http://software-dl.ti.com/processor-sdk-linux/esd/docs/06_03_00_106/linux/Overview_Building_the_SDK.html, you can build everything from the installer itself. Please note that the bitbake target will be "arago-tiny-rootfs" in the build procedure to build the Arago Tiny filesystem.

    Regards

    Karthik

  • Hi,

I try to follow the instruction as per  http://software-dl.ti.com/processor-sdk-linux/esd/docs/06_03_00_106/linux/Overview_Building_the_SDK.html

I am getting error as below

  • Hi Venkatesh,

That was a typo, the image is called "arago-tiny-image".

    Please use MACHINE=am65xx-evm bitbake arago-tiny-image

    Regards

    Karthi

  • Hi Karthik,

I followed the instructions as per above link ,got some warnings during the build process but successfully able to build minimal target filesystem.

Build output is generated in ARAGO/ARAGO_FS/tisdk/build/arago-tmp-external-arm-toolchain/deploy/images/am65xx-evm.

But while booting in EVM  I am facing below issue...

i have not made any modifications in the source to include FTP service and used default one.

  • Hi Venkatesh,

Are you suggesting that there is a kernel crash triggered by simply adding the ftp service into the build as discussed earlier in the thread? I need context of your trials to understand this log and how you ran into this error. It is highly unlikely that that the addition of ftp utils trigger this.

Please try to remove ftp, rebuild and confirm what you see.

    Regards

    Karthik

  • Hi Karthik,

I used the default minimal file system didn't make any modifications to enable FTP service in the source.

    Venkatesh

  • Hi Venkatesh,

Can you please provide more details so that I can clearly understand your problem statement?

    • Are you suggesting that you built the default arago-tiny-image - no additional changes - and uses this filesystem.
    • How did you build the kernel and kernel modules? Are these default kernel sources as well?
    • Please describe your steps to prepare and boot the target using the above two.
    • If you have additional details that you can provide, that would be good too.

    Regards

    Karthik

  • Hi Karthick,

"Please describe your steps to prepare and boot the target using the above two."

I have prepared the target filesystem with below steps used the default source .

    http://software-dl.ti.com/processor-sdk-linux/esd/docs/06_03_00_106/linux/Overview_Building_the_SDK.html

    1.mkdir ARAGO/ARAGO_FS
     mkdir ARAGO/download

sudo apt-get install git build-essential python diffstat texinfo gawk chrpath dos2unix wget unzip socat doxygen libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6:i386 libz1:i386

2 By default Ubuntu uses “dash” as the default shell for /bin/sh. You must reconfigure to use bash by running the following command:

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure dash

    3  cd ARAGO/download

     wget developer.arm.com/.../gcc-arm-8.3-2019.03-x86_64-arm-linux-gnueabihf.tar.xz
    $ tar -Jxvf gcc-arm-8.3-2019.03-x86_64-arm-linux-gnueabihf.tar.xz -C
    $ wget developer.arm.com/.../gcc-arm-8.3-2019.03-x86_64-aarch64-linux-gnu.tar.xz
    $ tar -Jxvf gcc-arm-8.3-2019.03-x86_64-aarch64-linux-gnu.tar.xz -C

     cd  ARAGO/ARAGO_FS

     git clone git://arago-project.org/git/projects/oe-layersetup.git tisdk

     cd tisdk

    ./oe-layertool-setup.sh -f configs/processor-sdk/processor-sdk-06.00.00.07-config.txt

    cd build

    . conf/setenv

    export TOOLCHAIN_PATH_ARMV7=/home/admin1/ARAGO/download/gcc-arm-8.3-2019.03-x86_64-arm-linux-gnueabihf
    export TOOLCHAIN_PATH_ARMV8=/home/admin1/ARAGO/download/gcc-arm-8.3-2019.03-x86_64-aarch64-linux-gnu

    MACHINE=am65xx-evm bitbake arago-tiny-image

4.Build output is generated in ARAGO/ARAGO_FS/tisdk/build/arago-tmp-external-arm-toolchain/deploy/images/am65xx-evm

i have taken arago-tiny-image file system and able to boot successfully.

NOW THE ACTUAL PROBLEM, where we need to enable FTP service in Tiny filesystem . For this made some modifications in the source .

    ARAGO/ARAGO_FS/tisdk/sources/meta-arago/mrta-arago-distro/recipes-core/images $gvim arago-tiny-image.bb

    # Install a small set of utils which can be used for diagnostics

    # ARAGO_TINY_IMAGE_EXTRA_INSTALL ?= "parted util-linux e2fsprogs dosfstools devmem2"     Comment  the existing

    ARAGO_TINY_IMAGE_EXTRA_INSTALL += " \

            dropbear \

            openssh-sftp-server \

            netkit-ftp \

    "

    - cleaned and recompile the source

    MACHINE=am65xx-evm bitbake arago-tiny-image -c cleansstate

    MACHINE=am65xx-evm bitbake arago-tiny-image

During the re-compilation got some errors(attached for reference)

    Am I missing any configurations?

    regards

    Venkatesh

  • Hi Venkatesh,

I have reviewed your steps and everything looks good except your step #4.

    1. I would not comment out what is existing there already, instead we should just add the packages that we need additionally. Quickly tried this on my side and it works well.
    2. You can simply run the bitbake command directly, there is no need to do a cleansstate. It worked for me without that.

    Changes that I made:

    # Install a small set of utils which can be used for diagnostics
    ARAGO_TINY_IMAGE_EXTRA_INSTALL ?= " \
            parted \
            util-linux \
            e2fsprogs \
            dosfstools \
            devmem2 \
            arago-feed-config \
            dropbear \
            netkit-ftp \
    "

    Regards

    Karthik

  • I don't know why unable to see your reply in the forum ..

  • Hi Venkatesh,

In order to help you with this, I have recreated the entire sceanrio and giving you the history of my command line - you can use this as the cheat sheet to figure out what is going on at your end. These have been tried on Ubuntu 18.04.

    mkdir am65xx-6.00-tiny
    cd am65xx-6.00-tiny/
    git clone git://arago-project.org/git/projects/oe-layersetup.git tisdk
    cd tisdk/

    ./oe-layertool-setup.sh -f configs/processor-sdk/processor-sdk-06.00.00.07-config.txt
    cd build/
    . conf/setenv
    TOOLCHAIN_BASE=/sdk/tools MACHINE=am65xx-evm bitbake -k arago-tiny-image

tar tf arago-tmp-external-arm-toolchain/deploy/images/am65xx-evm/arago-tiny-image-am65xx-evm.tar.xz | grep dropbear
#The above will not give you any results

Next edit the file to add the dropbear and FTP, patch is below

    cd ../sources/meta-arago/
    vi meta-arago-distro/recipes-core/images/arago-tiny-image.bb

    Patch is here:

    diff --git a/meta-arago-distro/recipes-core/images/arago-tiny-image.bb b/meta-arago-distro/recipes-core/images/arago-tiny-image.bb
    index 56e94293..fe3f4efe 100644
