  • Hi,

    The obvious cause is "asynchronous external abort" and seems to happen when the following instruction is executed "PC is at memcpy+0x44/0x330". You can back trace the stack to find out where and which function is causing it.

    So it seems that the exception is slave error, unaligned read.

    Am I missing something ?

    What does asynchronous means ?

    What does slave error means ?

     I could not understand this when reading the ARM technical manual.

    According to "Understanding a kernel Oops", https://opensourceforu.com/2011/01/understanding-a-kernel-oops/,

    This is the error code value in hex. Each bit has a significance of its own:

    • bit 0 == 0 means no page found, 1 means a protection fault
    • bit 1 == 0 means read, 1 means write
    • bit 2 == 0 means kernel, 1 means user-mode

    the error code 1211, means b0:1 - a protection fault, bit 1:0 - a read action, bit 2:0 - kernel.

    So, I interpret it as reading the value at an illegal address which may be protected by MMU, or not in data area. Since it seems to happen in memcpy (kernel), it may step over some memory and causes some address became illegal. This is my guess and it will need further debugging.

    We are not proficient in ARM technical questions. I won't be able to help much in that area.

    In the dump below Link Register (LR) does not point to Kernel code like PC register. The LR value is not something like 0xc0xxxxxx.

    I tried to dump the area pointed to by LR but is is unmapped.

    My understanding is that LR register points to the instruction to return to when exception is taken.

    Is that correct ?

    Kernel is loaded at 0x82000000 and uses space beyond that. The LR register doesn't look legal. None of your 3 dumps has legal LR address. It looks to me is typical memory overwritten issue. I won't be able to help you in debugging the code. The questions you asked are generic Kernel debugging and can be found on internet. This forum supports TI specific issues. For your issue, I suggest that you start with TI prebuilt kernel image and adding your change one at a time, or check what were changed since last working version and see what could possible cause the crash.

    Is the crash dump on TI EVM using prebuilt images? If it is running the images with your applications, could you try using the prebuilt images and see if kernel boots up?

    The log I posted yesterday should confirm that.

    One executable was missing in the pre-built filesystem : /usr/bin/makedumpfile

    I copied it from Yocto build. I think that this executable is used only when creating the crash dump file and not when starting kdump.

    I also modified kdump.conf so that start of kdump service goes on.

    Yesterday test was done with u-boot not coming from pre-built binaries.

    I just did the test again with pre-built u-boot and kernel crashes the same way.

    I just tried with PLSDK 6.3 release on the kexec. I don't know if we are talking about the same thing, but I can't reproduce the issue. It boots to the kernel prompt. Is it what you intend to do? Please see my console logs.

    You don't do the same thing as I did.

    You run kexec from a booted Linux.

    What I did is booting Linux from u-boot and the crash of kernel thread appears when the kernel starts. See the log I posted.

    I used pre-built binaries with some modifications I described in previous post.

    So the crash is caused by your modification.  It seems to me that there is some illegal address accessed as I previously indicated. It will need to debug or code review to see where it could cause the crash.

    To be more precise, I only tried to setup kdump service.

    With prebuilt image and filesystem it does not start correctly and I had to modified kdump.conf and copy missing makedumpfile executable.

    All that is in user space, and not in kernel, so why does this make a kernel thread crash ?

    The kernel is the pre-built one from TI not some kernel compiled by myself.

    Did you reproduce the crash ?

    Can you say how to configure that kdump service ?

    Sorry for the slow response. No, I have had time to look at the issue. I tried with your '-p' option, but it gave me error saying memory not reserved. I modified the cmdline to reserve 512M for crashkernel, but same error. How did you get "kexe -p /zImage" to execute?

    TI system test tested the kexec using "kexec -l /zImage; kexec -e" command.

    Here is a complete log file.

    This is done with pre-built binaries and filesystem.

    So check that your kernel is the same as the one I use.

    EVM is booted via TFTP/NFS.

    kexec -l + kexec -e works correctly for me too.

    We use kexec -p because we want this capture kernel to be executed when the system kernel panics.

    A lot of internet pages mentioned -p option, but I have not seen any example about it. All examples refer to "-l" and "-e". I am chekcing internally if "-p" is supported but have not heard back. I'll post back once I get the internal response.

    Probably not, I haven't gotten any answer from development team. I recall a long while back when this was discussed, the suggestion to verify kexec was -l and -e options. I pinged several times, and still not getting any answers. My guess is -p is not supported.

    Roadmap

    Following features supported in MCSDK are not supported in Processor SDK 02.00.02 Release, and will get added in future Processor SDK releases

    • Drivers: UDMA, 10G-KR firmware, IPSec inflow, kexec, network bonding

    In MCSDK, there was a keystone2_recovery_defconfig which is the configuration for crashkernel without any hardware modules, networking, etc. This file doesn't exist in the PLSDK. So, the implementation of -p hasn't migrated to PLSDK, and hence isn't supported in current Linux Proc SDK.
